After continued success with a black Hula Popper last year, I thought about a fly that could mimic the action of one. This is what I came up with http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/...ction=view¤t=HPBassBug003.jpg http://s200.photobucket.com/albums/...ction=view¤t=HPBassBug001.jpg The bathtub test proved successful. It floats right and "pops" with short jerks of the line. I figured it would be best to tie this on with a loop knot to give it freedom to move. Now the hard part...waiting for open water! EDIT: I tried to upload photos the way Davesett2000 explained, but I don't get the "Paste" option here.

I wished you did not say how good a Hula Popper works. The hula Popper is an old lure and most people have forgot about it. If you want to have a ball go on some good bass water at night with a Black Hula Popper, throw it out and let it set for as long as you can stand it and then twitch it, hang on. My son and I landed and released 30 bass the last time we went. I mostly fly fish now but I still use traditional bass tackle once in a while.

I was an avid reader of the Field & Stream Fishing Contest for many years and I remember that the fly rod winner fot Brown trout one year was caught in Lake Shasta, CA. on a fly rod Hula Popper. the guy was probobly fishing for Bass and had a big (14+ #) surprise.

I have several fly rod Hulla popers (assorted colors), but the tails need replaced and I haven't found the correct size replacements...

pete make them your self  just stick a  needle in your vice in place of a hook.
then lay a thread base  add some rubber or crystal flash  or what ever .
and  whip finish   then slide it  off the needle  and  glue it in .

here are some good "hula popper" type flies out.  Most are Deer hair, some are poppercorks.  Both float really well and fish just as good.  The deer hair cast better in the wind(they're a little heavier).  Try "flyshop.com, or Bass proshops.  If you are trying to tie your own try "netcraft.com, good supplies.
