    As reported in Fly Fisherman mag (Jan - Feb issue);

    Fly tier Fran Beters, creator of the Haystack, the Usual and Asuable Wulff  series of fly patterns died from congestive heart failure at his home in Jay, New York, on Sept. 6, 2009.  He was 78.

    he article goes on to speak about his growing up in the Adirondacks and his contributions to fly fishing; His fly-tying skills were legendary and in addition to commercial tying efforts, he taught classes and seminars.

    I have never met Mr. Betters but I am aware of his reputation as a fly-tier.  He will be missed.

    It is with sadness that I have learned of his passing, I knew him and would visit his shop and always talk with him when I could get there. My last visit He asked if I needed anything and I said I was going to pick up a few flys, when I headed to a certain fly Fran asked how many I wanted I told him a dozen. When I went to pick them out he said no just wait a minute I'll tie them up for you, it took him less than 15 min to tie them. I said you didn't need to do that and he said that the ones on display had been tied by someone else and he just wanted to be sure I had some good ones. Fran you will be missed. Your friend Lou

    That is sad but look at the wealth of knowledge and skill he has passed on to the living.   Rest in Peace Fran and thank you for helping us to more fully enjoy our sport and appreciate the great outdoors.  Now the burden is on us to continue the good work.
