I ice fish some of the lakes I fish in the summer and it's the summer when I do my "homework" for spots to try when it comes time for icing. I usually look for deeper holes on any lake and fish as deepest as I can for walleyes, northerns and/or perch. For trout we go big time deep. We start fishing bottom and set lines up higher gradually if nothing is hitting. My son made some ice fishing rigs that jig for you if there is a wind and we put in a couple rods in rod holders with orange marker tape tied to the line. Lot's of ways to do, that's why it's fun & challenging <!--graemlin::)-->. |

IF YOU JUST WANT A "DEPTH FINDER" TO FIND CERTAIN SPOTS, YOU'RE BETTER OFF GOING WITH A HANDHELD THAT READS THROUGH THE ICE. A FLASHER IS REALLY USED MORE FOR KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR BAIT AND THE FISH. IF YOU'RE GONNA BUY A FLASHER I WOULD SAY GET A VEX, I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO COMPARE IT TO BECAUSE I'VE NEVER USED ANYTHING ELSE. BUT I'VE NEVER BEEN DISSAPOINTED WITH THE VEXILAR |

MY NEXT ONE I LIKE IS THE AQUA VIEW CAMERA. IT SHOWS YOUR JIG AND THE FISH. YOU CAN WATCH THE FISH HIT YOUR JIG. AWESOME!!!!!
NEXT IS THE FLASHER AND THIS ONE IS A MARCUM COLOR POINT AND IS FOR SALE FOR $150.00. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT, I JUST DO'NT USE IT ANYMORE. E-MAIL ME AT howardgarris@yahoo.com IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.
THE VEXLAR IS A GREAT UNIT AND IT WORKS EXCELLENT. THEY RUN FROM $299.00 AND UP. ALL FLASHERS ARE FOR ARE FOR YOU TO WATCH YOUR JIG AND WHEN A FISH APPEARS IT WILL BE A DIFFERENT COLOR ON THE FLASHER. YOUR JIG MITE SHOW UP AS RED AND THE FISH WOULD BE ORANGE. I might do a little check on the Marcum unit that Walleye King suggested. If you're the walley king, I might have afew questions for you. I am new to ice fishing with a million questions. Thanks all of you so far. It makes me feel good that others are willing to share some of their knowledge to help others. I hope I can do the same later on. |

We have several different rods/reels, sticks, boards, etc. that we use for icing and ya know what, the free spool of line on a willow stick with a pice of orange marker tape works the best <!--graemlin::D-->. A small splitshot sinker with a small three-prong hook, through the dorsal of a medium sized minnow is a killer for ice walleyes <!--graemlin::cool:-->. The whole setup costs about $5. |

I charged it up and now I'm ready to go.(as soon as there is ice) It was $229.00 at Thorne Bros. with free shipping. Read through the manual and it is easy to operate. |

I may get a marcum this year to try out, or the new FL20. Either one or the Lowrance is great. Flasher can be used all year round. I use mine on my boat with a high speed transducer. The plus of having it on your boat is the REAL TIME display you get. |

As much as I would like a Vexilar, I think the Lowrance X67 or even the 68C for a little less money might be the option. Even the Marcum makes a good choice. I think the final decision might just be how much I am willing to spend. Does anybody really feel that the Vexilar is a for more superior unit than any of the others? Thanks Again! |

Thats the old Ford vs Chevy battle. All work fine, and all will HELP you catch fish. Vexilar has a name and great products and Marcum has great products. Marcum actually has better line seperation and more power and better IR capabilities. Im a Vex guy but I can be persuaded. <!--graemlin::)--> |

A few years ago I made a pretty good deal on a Clearwater Classic made by Zercom.( I bought it about a week after ice melt in the spring and the dealer didn't want to carry it over the summer in inventory.) Since the many times I've had people useing a Vexilar comment on the detail that I could pick up that they couldn't. It doesn't have all the nice pretty colors but it gives me the underwater info I want. |

Ive used his Zercom alone and never found it better than a Vex in any way. The Vex is much crisper and has 1 more color. Not to say your machine is not good, but its definatly not better than a vex. Same power, 1 less color, no IR button.
Just my 2 cents |
