The winter salmon we catch are stockers by the state in various lakes we fish. There are open salt water fishing for winter kings, but thats quite a drive for us in the interior. I make it to the coast and salt water only about 20-30 days a year.
We use shrimp, cut hereing, artificial eggs, artificial lures (spoons mainly) most of the time the bait is stationary at a depth of no deeper than 4 feet of water. When we fish for lakers and arctic char of course we go deeper...the rainbows and landlocked salmon can be caught mostly in 8feet of water or less.
No special secrets with us...hope this helps? Of course we use a strong amount of "The Force" when ice fishing.
