Your buddy is close on the mark for equipment rod and line size. Try online shopping with Cabelas or another online catalog source. Search the internet for ice fishing rods? In-Fisherman puts ot an annual ice fishing edition that covers species and gear, a great source for inforamtion about hardwater.

    anyone else? TSS

Try Jason Mitchell rods. I've got the 38" ice special spinning rod. It's softer and more forgiving. Not that I've caught any lakers with it, but it dubs up as an excellent pike or big walleye rod.
