When in doubt-----Punt!! Seriously> what where, why, when are you fishing. What Baits and what are you fishing for?Where are you located? Are you fishing Lake, stream or Pond? Boat or shore? Talk to your people at the local fishing tackle shop and /or fishermen/fisherwomen around your area! Other than that you have not given enough info in order for us to give you a solid answer. Good luck and better fishing to you!! Bill J. aka/fishnhunt> mjkamm44 wrote:

it's never to cold ta go fishing..... i've had some of my best days out on the ice with the tempts around 10 below and a wind chill of 50 below or colder.

4 holes is not enough looking in yer area for any fish. but like fishnhunt said talk with the people that are out in yer area all the time. see what they are doing and the areas that they are going to- don't put holes right next to them- but try and learn from them. then look for areas that are the same and try yer luck there.

Hang out in the fishing section at wal-mart if you don't have a local bait shop. There's always some old-fisherman there who's willing to give pointers. Hardest trick to ice fishing is finding the fish, after that it's cake

me and an uncle of mine went out on mcdonald lake in the upper peninsula of michigan in a town called gulliver it was 67 below out with 15 mph wind and we took 4 of the largest pike id ever seen that day.and even caught a 16 inch large mouth but had to let him go it was outta season lol the point is there was over 4 feet of ice and snow on the lake.I think that at this point the temperature outside wasnt much of a factor. so no i dont think that it ever is to cold for the fish but i told my uncle after a couple hours we were nuts lol but we had a lot of fun that day.

It might be too cold for extended trips on the ice.  I know one time that even while we were basically in t-shirts in the ice shack with the heat on high, the ice holes would still freeze and we constantly had to skim them.  What's even worse was that the holes would shrink about one inch per hour.  8 inch hole after about 4 hours became a measely 4 inch hole that we couldn't pull up fish through.

we could make this a i done this or that thread and tell a few storys' along the way.

slipperybob i've been there and done that too. the thing that has always supprised me the most about ice fishing is how often i've sat in a shanty in 80 plus feet of water fishing for perch er smelt and see a pike or trout swim just under the ice.

I think the worst thing about subfreezing temps is deciding to move or stay. Do I want to put up with 10 minutes to 30 minutes of packing and unpacking or just stay sheltered. Wind is the biggest factor. I find it most difficult when my eyes are tearing just from the cold. Gotta remember the ski googles.

It's just a funny as the sweat from your head can make a hard ice cap on your head.  Snow Dome!

It's never to cold to go ice fishing but we all have our personal limits. Mine are -30 or -60 wind chill. I've had the same problem of holes freezing over even when hot in the shack. My solution was to rig a battery operated fan blowing down under the shack. It created just enough heat to keep the holes open, even in the 20 to 30 below range.
