I'm thinking about a trip to one of the two the second week of October and having never fished the gulf coast I don't know what type of gear I need or what the opportunities are for fishing from shore.

Are their fishing piers in either of those locations? Can you fish off the bridges or is access restricted?

Do you need a long surfcasting rod like you see the guys using in Virginia or at Cape Hatteras, or will medium heavy baitcasting tackle do.

Any hints would be appreciated.
