im form virginia and weve got the bridge tunnels over here. a lot of times our basic rig is a kahle hook about 5/0 rigged with a nice small spot usually 4-5 inches max. put that on a leader about 5 ft to a three way and about 6 inches to a cannonball or bank sinker, avry the weight to hold bottom but also drift a little wiht tide. we use this for the bigger doormats that we get. otherwise fluke rigs tipped with squid strip about 6 inches long work good too. some people will add a gulp sand eel or jerk shad to the fluke rig for extra scent. If your up norht massachusetts rhode island area, best bet is to use a tandem rig. a nice big spro jig on the bottom 4-5 inces of leader there tie that right to a three-way, usually 30lb fluoro will work good, then on the other leg ise a fluke rig or another smaller jig tipped with squid or gull works good. some people will also use ball and chain rigs similar to those used for ling and cod. just change out the hooks to something a little longer and you're good to go
