Fred Arbogast Hawaiian Wigglers

The Hawaiian Wiggler was introduced in 1936 and featured one of the company's greatest innovations. While fishing Lake Okeechobee in Florida, either Fred or mhis dad fashioned a skirt out of soft rubber and immediately started getting strikes. The patents for the Hawaiian Wiggler and the Hula Skirt were issued to Fred's dad, Johnson Arbogast. This lure was an instant success and helped make Fred Arbogast famous around the world. The Hawaiian Wiggler was offered in a number of styles and sizes as well as a wide variety of colors. The availability of these lures sets their prices far below those of many other lures of the same age. This makes the Hawaiian Wiggler a great collectable for someone on a tight budget. No. 1 Hawaiian Wiggler
" target="_blank"> The No. 1 was the deep-running member of the sensational Hawaiian Wiggler family. This original 5/8 oz. lure would later be marketed as the casting No. 1 Hawaiian Wigglerafter a smaller 1/4 oz. spinning version was released. A weedless lure with a single upturned hook and a spinner similar to Al Foss's Figure Four design, this lure was excellant around weeds, rocks and stumps. |

Welp, I can't make a correction because the "edit" function doesn't work which means the post has been trashed by the site...When will they ever get it right? Everything was working fine until they changed the look of the site! Again, the techies got it wrong...I hope my dues didn't go toward their salary! I can't make a complete post as you can see above...Some how the "Add Reply" isn't working either! |

Cool 'wigglers Pete...you're right...no edit post button. I made a post this morning and tried to post a smiley, just like I've done a million times before, and it left a whole screen full of crap! Just when you thought it couldn't get worse...now even the smileys are screwed! *What the heck? I just came back to this thread to see turnip's last post...and NOW there is an edit button...lets see if the smiley thing is fixed too... ...cool...it works! |

Hey guys...here's a kind of rare color 'bug...its a purple coachdog jointed Jitterbug. Its a little faded, but not bad, considering its age. |

Jointed Jitterbug
The Jointed Jitterbug first appeared in 1961. This lure was designed by John Oney. It came in two sizes, 3/8 oz. and 5/8 oz. The Jointed Jitterbugs were listed as model Nos. 620 and 670. Black is a common color. I'll have to check my color charts to date your lure, Mo. |

Mo, I haven't found a date for your Jointed Jitterbug yet, but I do know that the Purple Coach Dog color was dropped when Pradco bought the company in 1997....I'm still looking! |

Also dropped was the Hawaiian Wiggler. Sales for this lure had dropped steadily for several years. Many of the original line of lures were continued and several models were dropped due to low market demands. New lures were added to the very successful Jitterbug line. Some of the production is being done in Arkansas, with the rest done in Central America and China. Lures that were kept included the Jitterbug, still offered in a number of variations, the Hula Popper and Fly Rod Hula Popper, the Sputterbuz and the Bobber Stops. @ turnip....the "A" on the end of the model #'s of your Wiggler boxes means they were part of a Dealer box of "assorted" models. You can see this in the various scanned catalogs on the NFLCC site...you will see this. Start here with 1941... http://nflcc.org/CPG/displayimage.p...=14&pos=12And if you scroll down on this webpage... there's a 1972 catalog not available on the NFLCC site... http://www.antiquefishinglures.com/arbogast.htm |

No. 2 Hawaiian Wiggler One of the original Hawaiian Wigglers, the No. 2 was a shallow running lure designed for fishing lily pads and brush near shore. The skirt may be attached in reverse for greater action. The above No. 2 is equipped with Weed Guard Spinners, which are not often found. No. 2 1/2 Hawaiian Wiggler / Sputter Fuss The Sputter Fuss was first listed as the No. 2 1/2 Hawaiian Wiggler. Hank Werner (an Arbogast lure Rep) designed the blade for this lure in 1939 while working at the Memphis Aircraft Co. Hank adapted a No. 2 Hawaiian Wiggler with this new blade to fish the lily pads in Horseshoe Lake near Hughes, Arkanas. A wider, flatter body was designed to help keep the lure on the surface, and the first buzz bait was born. The above pic is of a later version. The older body shapes are different for the Sputter Fuss, and rare... |
