Dave
That's it! The Slow Dancer. I couldn't remember the name. Too bad they discontinued (I think) it. They had another one with the same action called the Smoo, but it had a lip on it and dove too deep.
Thanks, now I can sleep - it was driving me crazy that I couldn't remember the name. |

I'm about 99% the lure is discontinued....you can see what year that catalog page is from on the site there. I thought I knew quite a bit about various "banana" type baits...but this added to my knowledge I have a couple of Smoo's in my collection...and have seen them on Ebay too I KNOW what you mean about trying to figure out what an older lures was / is. I'll do a post in a couple of days that should help you folks out on here Rooger wrote: Dave That's it! The Slow Dancer. I couldn't remember the name. Too bad they discontinued (I think) it. Good luck krissy. When you find out let me know, I'll by a punch myself. Cabela's has the gold color but I can't find clown. Not even at the Rapala site. So I guess they don't make it anymore. If you want some good used ones contact Davesett2000. I've purchased lures from him in the past and will vouch for him. He will get them right out to you at a very reasonable price. By the way welcome to the club and the BB. What part of the country are you from? |

Beno, orange with black spots. Last one I've seen is hanging on my den wall and hasn't seen water in 20 years. Rapala countdown #5 ? in crawfish pattern. Was told it was a discontinued color due to slow sales. Try Fin-N-Fur in Ashland Ohio for the Berkley Frenzy cranks, they always have a bunch during show season. I'll try to get a website or mailing address up shortly. |

To find Rapala's in a store at 50% off these days is tough. You'd have to catch one of the "big box" stores (WalMart etc...) clearing out inventory....or a tackleshop going out of business....or watch Ebay like a HAWK. I was lucky to catch 3 K-Marts closing out in California back in the late '90's. I have a few Rapala's for sale...but at the moment.....not a single jointed one....as Frank, Pete and others wiped me out This website here has several Frenzy's and Rapala's for sale....both new and used. I purchased some things from him a few months ago. http://flatware-replacements.com/fishinglures.html The Rapala Countdown in crawfish color is a tough one to find...Ebay is probably the only way to find one. I see Beno's on Ebay in lure lots and tackle boxes of lures for sale....and is how I added these 3 to my collection of "banana-type" lures.

My favotoldlure was/is the# #3 Lazy Ike in the green frog pattern.I know they sill make ikes but not the frog.T good news isthat I have been able to get a few of them off of E-bay.I also miss the Jensen frog legs lure , it was a top water much like a hula popper , but with mechanical legs that kicked when you pulled the line. They caught bass like crazy. |

I guess I'll heap more regret onto the Rapala pile. I have always been an advocate of Rapala lures and I probably carry around 100 of them in my boat at any given time. However, some of their decisions dumbfound me. For example, they discontinued the Risto Rap. I know they came out with the DT series but the Risto Rap is sizes 7 & 9 were always top notch producers for me. Colors in Silver Blue, TN Shad, and Plum Shad were my favorites. In fact, the original SB color "genuine silver plated" was always my go to lure. I have jointed models, original floaters, countdowns, shad raps, shallow shad raps, rattlin' rapalas, and Risto's in the old SB color. Spring, Summer, Fall, the SB color was always my choice and always a winner. Why on earth they did away with this color is beyond me - it was not for lack of sales. Every person I know who fishes with hard baits has at least one of these in their box. Another Rapala that is long gone now are the Inox Series of Magnums, Super Shads, and Skitter Pops. These lures are awesome for durability. I do a lot of fishing for pike and musky and most wood lures get torn up after a few fish, but the Inox Super Shads and Magnums in my box show hardly any wear after 10 or 12 seasons and too many fish to count. I have some friends who fish for Stripers and Blues that won't fish with anything else because the Bluefish will murder lesser wooden baits. Maybe that's the ticket - the Inox baits were just too well built so people didn't buy as many or as often. What a shame.

Another bait that is almost impossible to find is the Turus Ukko 7" Jerkbait. I always had top confidence in a color called Black Plague, it was all black with red dots and little white halos around the red dots. These things are just total pike and musky slayers. I don't know what happened to the company. One day they seemed to be doing well and then they vanished. They were all hand made, tank tested and tuned in Finland like the old school Rapala's. I still have a few of these baits but they are on their last legs. |

It wouldn't surprise me if Rapala just got tired of trying to get the steel for the Inox lures at a reasonable price....and Asian steel is still rife with quality problems. At the moment there are 112 auctions of nothing but Risto Raps on Ebay....many starting at $0.99 with no bids on them....here's one of 2 RR9's in SB & SG for about $12 including shipping... Ebay Auction for 2 Risto Raps There's another guy on Ebay with a store that has Ukko's...but $20 - $25 Ebay Ukko's I also see these ocassionally in larger lots of muskie lures.....but almost none in single auctions. I see ton's of Lazy Ikes on Ebay....with very little interest in them...so it's easy to get a bunch of them at a reasonable price. Life Member David BB Linkmeister

I still find Skitter Pops at Cbela's and BPS. That being said, the selection is limited. A couple of years ago I remember reading an article or a posting here, declairing that the Skitter Pop is no more...
Like you, I have many Rapala's that I carry with me. Infact, my first purchases were the Skitter Pop & Prop, both in all the color options. The first time I laid eyes on the Risto Rap I knew I needed a few of them rascals! They have been a regular addition to my box ever since! LM since 2005 Bushwacker Deputy Sherif

A buddy of mine was looking for a topwater lure called a chug-n-spit,The only one I could find is a Mann's saltwater lure that is 7" long,he told me that the ones he had where only about 3" or so.Do you know if they use to make a freshwater variety? I checked there site and found nothing. It looks just like a Rebel Pop-R but it has a hole through the mouth that went up through the top of the head.It would spout water up through it when you would twitch your rod tip. Hi David - you know that guy with the $22 Ukko's on eBay? He only has crankbaits left now. Reason being, I bought all his jerkbaits! He even had one Black Plague color so I appreciate the heads up. The price may seem steep but given the number of 42-48 inch muskies I have fooled with them, I gladly paid the entry fee. As for the Risto Raps, I probably have 2 new in the box - in every color and size - from the early 2000's when they put them on clearance for $1.99 each. I have Risto Raps like sharks have teeth, if one is lost another will just pop out and replace it. I just don't get why successful products cease being made. I have some of the newer DT series, but the Risto trumps them in one area hands down and that is trolling. I have trolled them side by side and the Ristos track better and their thicker lips crash off rocks and stumps with hardly a scratch. Ristos almost never need tuned no matter how bad you abuse them. I have twice broken the lips in half on DT-16 baits so I stopped trolling with them.
Ebay is a great site. I can usually find just about anything, and I have saved searches to notify me of new listings for certain lures. The other thing I like about ebay is when buying from fellow fisherman, I tend to have a good buying experience. I don't use it for much else to be honest! |
