I enjoy catching smallies. Most of the time I take ultra light when floating down the river cause I usually catch perch and bluegill and normally get alot of smallies in the 12 inch range and that is a whole lot of fun. The big smallie was caught on ultralight and it took a few minutes to get him in, weighed a lil under 5lbs. Gun Control, Its Hitting Where You Aim!! I like going after gills with the ultralight stuff. When you hook up with a good size gill on ultra light it's a real good fight. U. S. ARMY 1964-1967 -

My favorite ultralight fishin' is for good ole Black Crappie...I use a Okuma Celilo 6'6" spinner with a Cardinal ultra light reel and a Daiwa Megaforce 5'6" spinner with a South Bend ultralight reel with 6 and 4 lb test respectively. I use the 6 lb on the taller rod from taller docks that I might have to lift the fish up and out. The 4 lb on the latter for more horizontal casting. Sometimes ya get lucky and get a Largemouth on and the bigger the bass...the better your finesse skills and drag better be as well....I also like bluegill and redear fishin' on ultralights. Real fishermen know when to CATCH and when to RELEASE... |

While Sunfish are a fun on ultralight gear, it is hard to beat a small mouth bass.
I am going to have to tie them at 1st place.

You haven't lived until you catch a 25" Northern while fishing for Crappie with an ultralight spinning set up and 5#test Power Pro! SorryI don't have a picture, I left my camera at home that day, as I set out to fish Crappie and Bass at the neighborhood pond and didn't see the need! I will NOT make that mistake again. Tom |

Any fish on 4# is my favorite. My best is a 12# drum from the bank, now that was a 45 minute contest. Gary |

while visiting falmily in minnesota last summer all i could take on the plane was my little telescoping ultra light spinning rod with 2 pound test (intending to catch crappie and bluegill). i fished with that rod more than half the time i was there for panfish and bass. accidently hooked a 26" northern and (on purpose) a couple 4 pound largemouths which all put up one heck of a fight and took several minutes to land. made for some of the most exiting fishing of my life.lol.

I got to go with small mouth bass. Most of my fishing with ultra-lite equipment is for perch but when I get a 15 to 20" smallie on its a blast. Lifemember and Bushwacker SMF upstate NY

Here in western North Carolina the shellcrackers are averaging 1.7 lbs. I caught a couple last season close to three pounds. Since then they have been my favorite panfish. I still love spawning gills though, and redbreasts, man they strike like a snake! EDIT: Here is a photo from last year on Lake Hickory. These are common on this lake. |

Love catching crappie, but nothing beats a 2-3 pound sand bass on ultralight rod&reel. |
