First reel in slack until you feel the fish, then jerk straight up(jerk it hard, except for crappie). You may be jerking sideways, which usually has a 50% hookup rate.

Know I also have noticed in some of your post you mention Crappie. Now if you are talking about crappie. You may be losing them because you are setting the hook to hard, as crappies mouths are so thin they tear easily. Just don't jerk as hard.

Sometimes the best way is to give the fish time to take the bait and just remove the slack and gently lift your rod until the fish runs. Works well for me on crappie, 'gills and even bass if they are not too large. Tom

I've had the same problem before. If you pull straight up when you set the hook, next time pull it to the side. It worked for me.

I usually don't go crazy setting the hook super  hard unless I'm fishing near a lot of cover and want to get that fish out before it takes me deep ...the Bass I catch aren't that Big to begin with, 2 to 4 lbs. uaually  and also, when  fishing other Fish like Shad, that have Soft Mouths,  you can kiss it goodbye if you yank it...better to  take up the slack ,or just let it Run and set the hook for you.....I Keep  my Hooks Sharp and my  line Tight....that usually does the trick.

Have you tried using circle hooks? When using circle hooks there is no hookset  the action of the fish turning with the bait in its mouth hooks the fish just reel in slack line and reel til the line is taught. I use circle hooks with my granddaughters when they fish they miss very few fish and they're only 4years and 2 years old the four year old recently caught and landed a 14 in bass.

The best part about circle hooks is that 95% of the time the fish hooks itself in the corner of the mouth where it is simple to remove! I love them. Tom

like i said crappie have the name paper mouth but if you are talking about catfish you might switch to gamagatsu circle hooks. they seem to hook the catfish themselves
