Toxicstar: A rough geographical location would be nice, along with a description of the water you are fishing. You don't need to post your address, just something like I use-NE Illinois. Tactics can vary widely from region to region. I have fished Crappie on Table Rock in SW Mo. and wouldn't think of using those tactics near home! Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

My advice- Make friends with other people who fish on the lake. Also your local tackle shop owner should be able to help you. Not only do those guys fish a lot, they meet other people in there store. |

pegsguy, I was wondering if you could help me to catch crappie up here in NE Wisconsin. I fish a very deep and mildly weedy lake. Also, how would I catch crappie in a very weedie flowage up that only gets to about 15 feet deep. |

In the summer crappie have a tendency to suspend out in open water. Drifting or trolling can work to find them. Some electronics will help find a school. If you find them throw out a marker bouy, back away from them, anchor and cast small jigs or a minnow to the bouy and have fun. Best thing to tell you is to go out put in your time to learn how that body of water works. Once you pay your dues so to speak and you are learn where the fish are at different times of the year, you will be able to go out there the rest of your life and and get into them. |

I've never used a fishfinder in all my life; but that is an option you might consider. I have two that I've never had in the boat. In the spring, you can generally find them around standing timber in the water and you don't need to fish all that deep; for they will come up to the top and grab your lure as you are reeling in. I usually fish a couple feet deep using the Charlie Nuckols method of fishing rigged with a curly tailed grub. |

I believe that crappie only feed on bait that is above them. I like the cover in spring and fall and open water near cover in high summer. I always start 1/3 of the way down in the column and work deeper until i catch fish. If I am in a boat with sonar and can locate fish, I will drop a minnow or curly tail on a jig down to 1-3 feet above where I am marking. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Ok then, maybe this will help. Go to this website and read some of the articles on Crappie. Reading about crappie is definitely one way you can learn to find and catch them. Heres the link: http://www.bassinonline.com/crp-index.asp Also, I believe you can still get a trial subscription to Crappie World at no cost to you. |

If you have caught one crappie there are probably more in the general area ,try using a jig about 18 under a float just large enough to hold the jig up. Cast to an area let jig sit until the waves from the float are gone, then give a 2 to 3 inch jerk to your line. work your float back to you. If this doesnt work cast out again a slowly retrieve rig stopping every foot or two .
take a child fishing.
May GOD Bless |

In mid summer crapppies can hide in the weeds and brushes. Fish for them way early before daylight or late evening. |

My suggestion is..................Find the Crappie. Once you do that you can get the fish. I find them usally around rock piles(weirs), Bever huts, and other falldowns. They can be found just about anywhere else. Use a small 1/16 or 1/8 jig head fitted with a beetle body ,tube, grub or wax worm and you got half of the equation down.
