    I found these neat hooks made by eagle claw a couple of months ago at a local K mart Sporting goods store and I picked them up and thought Why not.

    Well my main reason why I wanted them was the fact of all the hooks I have been useing have either been gut hooked , or just to wide and foul hooked the Bull Gills I have been catching. Since I am a catch and release angler ( eventhough I do eat what I reap ) I hated tryin to release gut hooked catches.

    So T tried them and man what a huge difference they made. Vey Little gut hook and since i fish barbless these hooks are super for what I'm looking for.

    Now my question is , since these hooks are Designed for Crappie , should I fish them ( rig wise ) differently for these bull gills.

    So far My largest bull gill has been just over 10 inches and these hooks have held up good under pressure.

    Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    I'm guessing these are the long shanked, golden hooks, that crappie anlglers use to put little minnows on. If you go to walmart, they have 96 CENT pack of hooks labeled panfish hooks. they come 20 to a pack. they are probably just like your crappie hooks but smaller (and you need to crimp the barb).

    I would say use the right tool for the trade. Because not every gill is going to have a big enough mouth for a crappie hook.

    looks like yanosick has this under control........no really i use the aberdene gold hooks alot also. work great, easy to remove hook-- even if they get hooked deep. if ya get snagged on a log-- just put steady pressure on the line and the hook straightens out and pulls free. then ya just bend hook back around. 0of coarse after a few times you will have to replace hook before it breaks.

    for catch and release fishing i try and use circle hooks. 2 things that makes it hard with them is;;

    1st-- finding them small enough for panfish
    2nd-- getting use to not setting the hook, let the fish pull the line tight and then start realing.

    i found a few ice jigs that were made with circle hooks and they worked great as long as i lifted the pole to set hook and not give that slight jerk that we do when setting the hook. i ran out of these jigs and haven't been able to find any more since.
