I was fishing yesterday and caught 2 tiny, almost embarrassing crappie. The reason I mention this is because I was fishing a rooster tail tipped with some trout dough and the lure was so much bigger than the fish that the fish had all 3 prongs of the treble hook hooked in its jaw all around the jaw. I was wondering how it got even the hook in its mouth, let alone the whole lure. Does anyone know why a crappie bites a lure that is sometimes much too big for it to swallow? A friend and I took his boat out Sunday. I was using a 4" Loudmouth Shad and brought in a half dozen from 6-14" with it. I couldn't believe it! The lure was nearly as big as most of the fish that I caught. Ben Bryant --- Life Member Since 1997 --- |

a crappie has a very large mouth for their size. they can stretch them lips quit a bit to take in bait fish or what ever they think is food.

I've gotten sunnies, crappies, perch, and smallmouth bass that have taken lures that are they're size or larger than them. I can only guess that they're trying to bite a little fin off the lure or something. Just like hungry tank fish nipping the fins off of each other or something. |

me and my father were fishing for largemouth bass. he was using a fairly large crank bait and had cast it over a tree limb sticking out of the water. the lure was hanging about 10'' out of the water and a 6" gill jumped out of the water and grabbed it hooking itself. it was not surprising that he took that big of bait but that he had jumped out of the water for it.

Crappie are vicious fish. Even a small fish will hit a lure up to half its size. TIGHT LINES! |

Happens to me all the time. Especially with bluegill. You get excited because you get a hit, and reel it in to find a fish that would have a hard time in a fight with a sardine. |

I saw an uncle pull a modest size yellow perch on a spoon he was casting for pike, perch and lure were about the same size and it was fair hooked. |

Here's a Youtube video I found about a catfish in an aquarium that ate another catfish around it's size. Pay attention to it's stomach bulge! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUOR...re=related

Brian It's not my video or aquarium, I hapenned to be surfing around youtube at the same time as I was viewing this forum. In my aquarium, I have two Tiger Barbs and a Pictus Catfish. Sometimes I feed my Pictus Catfish live shiners from the pond in back of my house. He gets bloated like that, too!

Did it look similar to this?
 Fish will choke on food.

It choked on a Bluegill. I found it floating this past spring. It was still pretty fresh |

Here's another video I found on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAV1M99hSzQThe bass in this video was found dead floating on the surface of a lake in Florida. The bass was trying to eat some sort of exotic cichlid. The bass was dead, but the cichlid was still alive (extremely hardy fish)!
