Can anyone suggest a good Pike lake in New York state. Not really looking for large pike(but I'll take them), just some lake that has an abundance of pike of all sizes. I just like catching pike of any size.

There's also Lake George, Great Sacandaga Reservoir (home of the state and former world record of 46-2), the Mohawk River, most of the bays off of Lake Ontario, the St. Lawrence, the list is quite long. GSR still spits out 30's every spring, but the rest of the year the fishing can get spotty.

Sure, add the northern and southern ends of the Finger Lakes to the list, plus Saratoga Lake and the Niagra River, but I think at this point it would be easier to list the lakes in NY that DON'T have pike populations in them, that would be most of the Adirondak trout lakes the DEC has reclaimed over the years.

You know, it's somewhat odd (though I personally am not complaining about this oddity) but the DEC website has a page listing where to go for carp in NY, and in some cases even what size you might expect to catch, but there are no such pages for the more glamorous species. Go figure.

maybe dec is trying to encourge fisherman to fishfor carp. This spring was the first carp I've caught since I was a youngster. Of coarse I had help from the master himself. Smiler<!--graemlin::)-->

Huh, some master, I've had all sorts of problems getting them going this season Roll Eyes<!--graemlin::rolleyes:--> . I have, however, solved most of those problems it would seem. Starting to get numbers, but not the size I was earlier.

High water temps is a killer to pike fishing UNLESS you fish the depths Wink<!--graemlin:;)--> and when surface temps hit 80+ basically the ONLY way you are going to get pike is to fish early morning / deeper water.

Bass will hide up under the slop...so too will a FEW small pike...but when the HEAT hits ya best be looking to 15-25' of water...the deep weed edges is a good place to start.

If the lake is good sized and has open water look for them suspended Smiler<!--graemlin::)-->

DEC map I have shows one contour line @ 10ft and a mean (average) overall depth of just 8ft. Sounds like a great spring-time trip, but a tough row to hoe in late season. I've heard the ice fishing is pretty good for perch and crappie.

i was very surprised that the average was 8-10 ft. when ya look at it u would think different, we also got a map at a nearby bait shop which showed depth, and i think the deepest was 17 ft, around the islands had alot and i mean alot of weeds, we had to pull the motor a couple times to clear them, but i did catch a nice smallmouth on a hellbender when we found some clear spots ta cast a crankbait Cool<!--graemlin::cool:-->

Yeah, it's been on my list of lakes I need to get to for a pretty long time, mostly for the ice fishing end of it. Still not sure if I'm going to get out for that this season (or any season after this) with a brace holding my ankle together. I have an idea on how to get myself comfortable with the idea (still leary of certain situations, there isn't much left of the ankle itself), if it works I have to make up for not being able to get out for anything all last season (so the perch and walleye have fair warning now) Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->

Well if camping is what your looking for and pike is what your after. The 1000 Islands is the place to be. Wellesley Island State park has it all. Hence the name Wellsley this is my favorate place to fish. That is why I chose the name even though I didn't spell it the same. There are more species of fish there than any where I know of. Ifwhat your after isn't biting than something else is.The camp ground is listed in the top 100 campgrounds in America. At one time it was in the the top 10. They rent boats have a full service marina, bait shop, a little grocery store, beach, full hook ups, sites with just electric, waterfront sites, tent sites, cabins. I believe there are 4 to 5 hundred sites, a golf coarse for all those putters. All this and the fishing is great. Cool<!--graemlin::cool:-->
