    Try catching a couple dink gills during the day and then use them as bait later when they are just "laying" there. Worked every time for me.

    ok, i have had a problem with one type of situation on the water for pike. i have fished and caught pike most of my life. the situation is this;

    when the pike are laying on the surface early in the morning or late at nite. i just can not get them to bite. i have caught them if they are porposing/ moving around on the surface bout not when they are just laying there.

    this happens mostly in the spring and early fall. but i have seen this also during the summer. i have found some back bays and bayous with pike laying on the surface and will not get a bite until they move down into the water colum.

    i have tried surface baits, flies, sub surface such has floating minnow baits, buzz baits and spinners, with no luck.

    I hope you aren't insulted with this question...but can you describe your techniques / retrieves when you fished these baits?

    There's a multitude of techniques out there to explore Eeker<!--graemlin::eek:-->

    i have dead stick floaters and supenders, i buzzed the spinners and slow rolled, i have twitched slow realed, speed realed and anything in between. every bait i have tried, i have done this. the only fish that would bite are the smaller ones that are below the surface. i have even used live bait under a bobber but as close to the surface as possiable. live bait with out weight on the line, i even had tried a fly rod with floating line and no weight on live bait. as i said before the only fish that would bite were the ones under the surface and i have found that these are the smaller fish.

    i have seen pike as big as 18-20 lbs. or bigger just laying there on the surface esspeilly in the mornings. these are the fish i am trying to get and what ussaully happens is i put them done. i have cast ahead of them, past them behind them and straight at them.

    i have found if these fish are moving they are catchable, at least the 8-12 lbers. are. i have also found over the years if you are seeing gar pike porpusing there are/most of the time, pike feeding under the gars. if you can get your baits past the gars, the pike are really apt to bite.

    Try a jungle jig with a 6" plastic shad hooked with the tail 90 degrees from vertical Retreive slowly in front of their noses. it has worked for me. White and red has worked best for me but use whatever color works well for you on your particular lake.

    Do you know the water temperature? what is it?
    What is the depth of water where the pike are laying. One of the things I do to provoke a strike is to reel in as fast as you can all the way back without stopping for nothing. Remember a northern can swimm up to 30 mile an hour right now.
    Another case scenario is that pike need to ajust their body temperature to the water
    temperature.This can take one good sunny afternoon or sometimes up to two days. The larger the pike body the longer it takes.These fish are lethargic and most time I move to more aggressive fish.

    Good luck

    thanks guys, i have tried almost every thing you have said. a couple things i haven't tried and i will try them next time.

    to answer artic, it happens all times of the year mostly spring and fall, some times in the very early mornings or late evenings. the fish i am having the most troubles with i believe they are just sunning them selfs like the big muskies do. what makes me think this is because the little pike will hit all most every time, it's the big bruisers that i am trying to fool.

    i have been luck enough to get a pair of 24lbers in my life time and i have seen bigger laying on the surface and trying to get them to bite.
