The time of day means everything when fishing for pike.  You will not catch any if its dark out, they have poor night vision.  The best time is earily morning, between sun rise and say about 10am.  The last hour of day light is also a good time for pike and thats when I fish for them, right as the sky turns from blue to red.

if you want to catch one, generally fish shallow bays as soon as the season reopens for pike (if it does where you live) or fish as soon as the pike finish spawning. then just cast buzzbaits and spinnerbaits and you should get some pike action.

all depends on where you live.. if your in florida or texas i guess you wont catch one if your up north check your local lakes online at lakelink.com and it will list species in there.. once you locate suitable body of water best bets are spoons or spinners for them and maybe live shad near a weedline...dont give up hope if your persistant you will get one

    Hey BBJ:

I currently live in souther Oregon were there aren't any pike or muskies,  I will be moving to the Lake CoeurD'Alene Idaho area sometime this spring(depending on when my house sells).   There are a lot of pike and meskies up there,  I've never fished for them but plan to a lot.  I realy like the top water action for bass with poppers,  I have some really large poppers(to big for bass), will pike hit them?

im sure a pike would hit it,im not sure about a muskie, probably though if they're feeding along the surface

Muskie and pike will kill top water baits. I like solid colors like black or blue and a buzzbait is a fantastic bait.  For poppers or stick baits fish them fast and irratic. After a pause really rip them or give 3 pops and a hard yank. Toothy critters hit more on reaction then to feed. Another top bait is a bucktail spinner. If you have none and have spinnerbaits they will work too just burn them with lots of quick rips. Add weight if you need too to keep them under. If you have spoons for bass use your biggest and rip them too.

Easiest way I've found to catch pike here in Michigan is to simply go bass fishing!  Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and even senkos produce pike for me.

if u can find a lake with the pike... throw a # 4 or #5 Mepps or Blue Fox spinners... nothing produces better quantities of pike. then after you have really located them u can find exactly what they want and throw anything from topwater to swimbaits. Pike generally wont take the bigger baits though, so if you dont care if you are catchin either pike or muskie it is better to downsize because you will catch more pike. I have seen friends catch muskies while we are bass fishing with Jawbreakers(little weedless bass spoon), yea... its unusual, but shows that it really just comes down to putting your time in on the water and findin what the fish want at that time. Put your time in and you'll get em eventually. Good Luck once you are finally able to get out there.

hey mike, muskies or pike will hit anything that moves actually...they do get finicky at times like most fish do but i have caught them on anything from 1/8 ounce jigs up to 12 inch long plugs and everything inbetween...i favor using spinnerbaits alot of the time recently but that could just be something that is specific to your area.. my suggestion is once you find the lake just to fine a pikey looking spot and try everything you got till it works...i like the spinnerbaits cause i fish heavy weeds alot and a bucktail spinner would never make it through it...another thing i have found that works wonders on musky and pike are chatterbaits...i cant count how many i have caught while bass fishing...hope this helps

I live in Michigan, and we have lots and lots of pike.  I've caught them on every type of lure and bait, including a worm on a hook fishing for bluegill.  But my all-time favorite Pike lure is a red and white "Daredevil" spoon.  I don't know why, but that lure is just a pike magnet.  A black and white "Daredevil" will work too, but not as well as the red/white.  Good luck

We had a running joke in Minnesota this year "If you want to catch pike/muskie go walleye fishing.  4 musikes on 1/16 ounce jigs and fatheads, 1 38" tiger muskie on a walleye spinner with gulp crawler.  I usually use daredevles or larger twister grubs for pike.  Follow along the weed edge in spring and you should be able to grab a few.  Deep water reefs always produce well in summer for me.

If your fishing from a boat, canoe and it is legal to use to rods use live bait 4' under a float 20' from weed edge with one. The other cast your favorite lures ( Rapala's,spoons, bucktails, spinnerbaits.) what ever you have along the weed edge. The live bait that I use is 6" or bigger perch that I catch on site. Check your local regs. to make sure it is legal in your area. Many states are encourging this with the out break of vh disease. Remember the bigger the bait the bigger the pike caught. You won't catch to many fish 8" fish with 8" bait.

    Good Luck.

Your right no pike at night at least I never caught one. But don't give up on bright sunny days in the middle of the day. either. If the water is cold the sun will warm the water by mid day and the pike will become more aggresive. I've caught many when the noon whistle  was going off.

jackattack, these goes are telling ya some good things about pike as it is part of their lives, eating what is available to them at the time they are hungry. or they had caused a reaction strike. i have gotten pike on all types of baits, live and artifical. my faverate baits are rapala's all sizes and colors. the huskey jerks work great, so does any regular rapala.

pike at nite, hhhmmmmm, i have gotten a few pike at nite and 1 musky. the musky hit a magnium rapala fishing for walleye on a sandbar that i knew the walleyes where feeding on at the time. most of my pike that i got at nite came on tip-ups through the ice with a full moon and a clear sky, also in deep water. the pike i got during the summer all of them came on jetter bugs, fishing for bass on a main lake structure of weed beds.
