can't beat a good old Johnson Sprite or a Dare Devil. Black and silver Rapala type bait work well too.

Basszilla, my go to lures for early season pike would be (in this order):

    1. Banjo Minnow (Yes, this lure works!)
    2. Inline spinner (e.g. Mepps Aglia #4 or #5)
    3. Lazy Ike

I like spoons too, but I prefer to use them later in the season. Go small on these lures and vary the retrieve.

Any crankbait 3-4 inches long in April and May trolling about 3.5mph in water 56-60 degrees on Lake St. Clair. Works good for BIG Walleye and Muskie too.

    Welcome aboard basszilla.

Jointed rapala's worked veryslow works well. Catch a 6" perch if legal and rig it quick strike 4' below a float and just let it sit out there on the edge of a flat. Then cast out with your rapala and increase chances two fold.

BZ, the baits i use almost exclusively are 1/8-1/4 oz. chartruse jig and minnow, or #9 countdown rapala (gray/black or blue/black). the nice thing about the jigs is that they're big enough for most of the pike you'll cath and small enough for just about anything else in the water. hope this helps and welcome aboard.

pike here in NJ have been taking the lures on a fairly fast retreve. water is still kinda cold between 35-40 degs. little supprised by that. been catching them on spoons, jigs w/white twister tail, and jointed lures as well as live bait. caught 11 on Sunday, nothing big.
