Caught my first Gar last weekend! woo hoo!

Yes, I had gloves on to grab it and unhook it, but took them off for the picture!
Actually, I thought the fish was Gorgeous!
 It was well behaved too.

Caught it using a perch minnow on a #4 hook under a bobber.
and yes, I was targeting Gar.

Almost caught one a few nights prior.. but hubby grabbed the line to grab the fish... because I was being a smart@ss and said "Go ahead David, reach down there and grab it!"
You see, I KNEW it had teeth.. lots of teeth.. um.. I guess David didn't know that until he SAW them... I can laugh now, but I was POed when I lost the fish.  It came up out of the water, he went to grab it.. screamed like a man, the fish flicked it's tail and broke off.
here is my new fish...  yes, I let it go.
But it has been stricken from my "fish to-do" list!

they are fun to get and hard to put a hook into, also good luck on yer next adventure.

Congrats on yer gar.  The fun comes from landing and catching the fish.  It's like I have been told a hundred times "Size isn't everything"  :) 

Still it's a nice fish, you will have to let us know how it tastes when ya get around to cooking it.  Or did you release it?

Beautiful fish. Gar are one of the most under appreciated sport fish. It's good to see I'm not the only one that respects their fighting ability. Go to Alabama or Texas and get yourself a monster Alligator gar. Your fish is a pretty good size for a longnose.

Thanks.. and oooo, I'd love to catch an alligator gar!  I have a necklace made from an alligator gar scale.  Actually, I have a few, and I bought my kids and my nieces and nephews some too! A woman down in Louisiana makes them!  just for fun, here is her link!
