I have been recently trolling this pond with some nice pickeral in it and i hacve been catching a lot of pickeral on a deep diving rapala shad, and the deep diving jointed shad.  Will this same technique work for northern pike .  Trolling in deep water with big lures.?   any suggestions, i really want to land my first pike this year.

It can....especially in waters that don't get fished for bass heavily...as they wouldn't see those lures very often.

A DT-16 Rapala would be good to try...but there's also several others that would work too....pretty much anything that can get down 12 - 20 ft..

A lot of pike fisherman were disappointed when Rapala discontinued their Risto Raps and Down Deep Rattlin' Fat Raps

If you take a look in the "Tackle Box" topic I had started in "Lures and Baits"....you will see a box with deep cranks there.

Also try deep running minnow baits.

A moderate size inline spinner will also work if you can be patient enough to let it get down deep enough. Experiment with speed either trolling or casting. Mepps Aglia in a #4 or 5. Tom

if ya have them or can get yer hands on a pair of portable down riggers will help too. run the size of rapala you want to use at the depth and you'll get into buisness. i like the mag. orginal rapala silver body with black back in the lake i fish the most. but for the last few years the gold body black back has come on in the huskey jerk series.

the in-line spinners and/or spoons do work great. just make sure ya get heavey enough equiment to handle the job. meaning barrel swivels to handle the line twists. go with as lite of line as ya dare for the size of baits you be using. with a med. to med heavey rod to handle the strike and the thrashing of the bait and fish when ya get one on.

a word of caution about pike fishing in deep water--sometimes you think you have hooked a small log or a big clump of weeds and ya pull it up to the boat and then everything will just explode at boat side. so be ready and have a real with a very good drag set where it should be for yer equiment.

The "down deep husky jerk" is a good one...

My personal favorite is the Rebel spoonbill minnow...

The Rapala "deep tail dancer" and the "tail dancer" are also very hot...

All of these are in my "go to" box for pike.  They can be trolled or cast.  My very first pike was caught with a DT16 in Wisconsin!  BPS has a great selection of the tail dancers, husky jerks and DTs.  You'll have to hunt for the spoonbill minnows on eBay.  My go to color for the husky jerks & spoonbills is black back silver sides.  I hope this helps!

Black back, siver seems to be my best color for bass, Firetiger for walleye except deep where a Purpledescent Deep Tail Dancer has been my best lure. Tom

    the magnum x rap
think around 6- 1/2 - 8 inches in length  and you should do well
with 6 1/2  being more the norm .
storm thunder stick, grandmas, jakes believers, cisco kids,  lots of  other companies make good  lures too .

I usaully go with orange or vampire original floaters.  This year i started using hollow body swimbaits for pike and they are better than any hard bait i ever used.

My two favorite Rapala's for pike are Deeptail dancers and large jointed if the pike are near the surface.
