Top water tips for freshwater stripers

    I only tried striper fishing 3 times in my life, all last fall on the same body of water, San Luis Rerservoir, home of the world record fresh water striped bass (over 67#). I caught a few on a depths of 50 to 120 feet on cut-plugged anchovies. I'm hearing that top-water action is hot for striper, but I'm not sure what to use and exactly where on a huge reservoir like San Luis. I mean, I've kept most of the fishing near the dam in depths up to 200'. But, I've heard of shore fishermen catching huge stripers casting from shore. What gives?

    I fish Stripers exclusivly, and always from the banks, boats are not allowed in the resivior that I fish in New Jersey. My go to bait has always been the Rapala original floater, 3 1/2". It's great for top water action.

    Try to match the size of the biggest fish the stripers feed on in your area. When the stripers come to the surface to feed they will attack a top water lure with some serious power. Not many other fish are more fun to catch on top water than stripers. I've caught hundreds of stripers in my lifetime & its still a thrill every time!

    I too fish in NJ for Wipers at nite. find big drop offs. sand bars, rock toes, or any place the water drops quickly from shore. The Rapala is a great top water. I also like to use a Zara-spook, or Pop R. Buzz baits will also work. try using a shallow diver and or chatter bait very slowly.

    Tarzan...where in NJ do u fish for Stripers that u can't use a boat?

    When the stripers are hitting top water lures, it's hard to beat the broke-back Rebels. You should also look into the floating Spro 4" shad, BIG Huddleston trout pattern swimbaits and Jackall Mikey and Mikey Jr. top water lures...and oh yeah, super spooks too...ya gotta walk yer dog SOMEtimes.
    Real fishermen know when to CATCH and when to RELEASE...

    I'll tell ya what, from fishin my home lake Santee Cooper down her in SC there ani't nothing like a good ole  bango-lure! thats the ticket down her. but Heddon Zara Spooks work great also! ther is alot of people catchin them on Bucktails tipped with shad and herrin in the river. i'm sure some of the techs.I use  will work just as good for you ,pretty much any topwater lure will work on a striper expecially when they are "bubblin" up the water chasin bait fish!
