Hello Fellow Members, I have recently started striper fishing this fall and have had a lot of luck so far in terms of numbers but naturally I would like to catch larger ones. Not to eat but to catch & release. So far I have had luck using Shad Raps but only catching 10-18" stripers. I tried a larger bait but only caught a couple, around the same size. I have tried trolling but have had no luck instead I cast with a very fast retrieve. I fish on the Delta (CA) in Frank's Tract, does anyone have any ideas on how to catch larger ones or maybe a different area in the Delta (marina to launch from)? Thanks again. Chris

Try live bait 35'-50' down . Also , if you want to stay with the top water action get a bigger plug. I found its best to go about an hour or 2 before sun up. Scott: Life Member Since 2005

If eels are legal for use as bait in CA try them. If not you can try to chum up some bigger fish. Here we use bait fish ground up sort of looks likes ground beef (but smells a whole lot worse lol) swish some of it into the water (about a handfull) & then hook up a full size bait fish without any weight & let it drift with the chum. If you like to fish with artificials, use musky size lures. I've had success with a Musky Jitterbug for surface fishing and Husky Cisco Kid for a large crank bait. Happy fishing. ~N.A.F.C.~B.A.S.S.~BoatU.S.~N.R.A.~A.M.A.~

Hey guys, You had any luck on the stripers lately? (Delta) I hear the sturgeon have been hitting but I've never fished 'em so I'll do some research and give it a try soon. Seems that last winter I was able to get live shad out around the mossdale area and nail some pretty good sized striper..... seems that this year the shad are thin. I'll be going out this weekend from Mossdale and hope for the best... any info will be great... I'll post the results either way. Will

Yeah, I have to say, the California Delta is a GREAT place for the stripers. I like Frank's, we usually launch at Russo's or the Sugar Barge and use the usual meat baits('chovies,eel,shad). But as for lures the BIGGEST striper I've seen out of those waters was caught trolling a Huddleston trout swimbait(the BIG variety). Broke-back Rebels, bucktails, hollow soft swimbaits(money minnows amd such) and Yo-Zuri jerkbaits are winners also...and don't forget the new Spro 4" shad swimbaits in either natural shad or the blue back herring(fall speed is up to you and the seasonal conditions). Make sure to read the local newspapers (west county,contra costa times) for good reports on WHERE the stripers are at the time to help stay on their migrations and locate HOT SPOTS. Real fishermen know when to CATCH and when to RELEASE...
