i see all sorts of pictures with people holding there trout while releasing them. i was taught to never touch the fish because if takes away protective slime and kills them. if thats true why do people hold the fish?

It does not harm the fish as long as you wet your hands prior to touching him Cool<!--graemlin::cool:-->

The best way to release them when possible is to hold them upside down in the water remove the hook and release right side up.

It is okay to briefly hold the fish for a pic before releasing. However, over-handling the fish is discouraged. Wet your hands or wear gloves, hold the trout around the base of the tail and cradle the chin with your front hand is the proper way to photo most any fish while minimizing any harm to the fish.
