GREAT THREAD TURNIP, INDEED A GREAT THREAD!!! Was enuff to make a Pacific Coast King fisherman envious!! Was surprised how ever to hear that they are all white meated!! Altho I shouldn't have been, after all, isn't the Atlantic Salmon White also?? 50% of all our kings are red, probably 25% are white and the remainder are marbled!(0n the Pacific Coast) Our experts tell us that the White Kings are short the gene that allows them to retain Beta-Caratien! Marbled only have a portion of that gene. None the less Turnip, A GREAT THREAD!!! Twink |

turnip wrote: All the Kings I have caught are white (meat). Never saw a pink (meat) one before! If you look closely to the pictures, you will notice the dark color. I was told that the fish are ready for spawn early this year. Ed caught the only silver sided one. Last year we caught mostly all silver sided salmon. LM since 2005 Bushwacker Deputy Sherif ................................................. Now this is one of the things I just didn't see on this salmon trip or any of ones I've been on " All white meat" !!!!!! On some of the pictures you can see where my brother Stan had cut them to bleed out and you will not see any "white meat". Last week I picked up a rainbow and a landlocked Atlantic out of Seneca I took some pictures as I cleaned them. After they were done if I didn't know which one was the the landlock I could not tell by the color of the meat. Which was a "pink" to orange color as ALL Kings I have ever cleaned are a orange (shade)color. Now when they are cooked they will be a "off white" to a grey color but not before cooking. |

Here's a little story for you that happen on this trip. It was late in the day and I had made change after change to get a fish on. Just could not get a rod to fire so I told them I was taking a break up in the front of the boat. I spend 95% of the time when I'm on the boat on my feet checking the the depthfinder for marks , down speed ,temp , changing out riggs looking for a "HOT" combo to hook up with fish, and changing the direction of troll. . So it was nice taking S0 a break was "NEW" to me on this trip...........then "FISH-ON" the #1 rigger. Down 85' back 10' on a "Undertaker" flasher with a matching meat head. Paul was on the rod in a heart beat (it was his turn for a fish) Stan was at the wheel keepping the fish to the side that the fish would be netted and Pete grabbed the "NET" !!!!!! As you can see in the above picture with the long handle from my 8' salmon net in Pete's hands........Paul works the fish closer to the boat All the time Stan keeps the fish on the right side of the boat and Pete's gets ready as Paul gets it in closer... ..............and then its right there Every thing got REEL quite in the back of the boat ...............after I said a few choice words a bit later I took this picture, you figure out what happen................... |

Now that I think about it, you are correct about the meat color...Sorry about that Twink! A brain fa**...And I had many of them on this trip! BTW, the answer to that question is, I knocked the fish off! I still feel bad about that one... LM since 2005 Bushwacker Deputy Sherif |
