Take a rig with 4# on it, most times smaller is better. Good luck! Tom

depends on the average fish size, normally 4 or 6 pound will do it but i know a couple of drainages in canada where rainbows top 15 pounds and then i use 14 pound spiderwire and many locals go heavier

When stream fishing for brookies or other Trout, I will use 2 lb to 6 lb. monofiliment. The lighter line will catch more fish as it won't spook them as easily. When trolling with downriggers for Lake Trout  I will use 14 to 17 lb. line to give me better abrasion resistance  and strength as I am trolling some heavier tackle like christmas trees along lake bottoms; then if you add a 6 to 10 pound fish to the end of all that, I like to have a little extra beef between me and a Laker with a mouth full of razor sharp teeth. I don't mind losing a fish every now and then; but I hate to lose $10 to $25 worth of tackle too.

    .

A real key here when trolling is your leaders and knots. Also checking those leaders for wear and tear often.

    hello all,
for light spinning tackle, 4lb-6lb Vanish will do it, plenty of knot strength to handle most trout,
make sure the reel has a good drag.
for fly fishing, 4,5,6 wt WF/DT  with a 5x or 6x tapered knotless Mirage tippet {9ft.-12ft.}.

I use both of these and they can handle 6lb Apache trout as well as monster German Brown...

I prefer the flurocarbon to monofilament for its superior wet knot strength
    and its invisible to fish
    {and people} underwater...
forget braid if you are trying for educated trout...they will not take it very often.

    good fishing

    J

Since this question was asked...there are a few new lines on the market. I am using 12lb. Nanofil(the diameter of 6lb. mono) on my trout combo.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if it wasn't for my super smooth carbon drag, my 30 year old Trilene would bust!
