What is your favorite way of rigging a crawler harness?

I like to make my own, a 26in leader with a color you like of beads. I allways put two hooks on the tail, sometimes three,,, (dont forget a blade or two of your choic above the hooks)

I'm with Walleye, 2-3 hooks for crawlers, 1 for minnows or leeches, a few beads and a blade. Sometimes I add a float or 2 to get the harness off the bottom. A lot of people tie them too long-5-6' I don't see the purpose in this.

I like to make my own as well.  I like 2 walleye wide gaps by Gamakatsu 3 4mm beads and a blade gold is my favorite.  I do like 5’ to 6’ long harnesses for trolling with dipsy divers.  Does that make sense  or is it a waist of line?

I don't think so hunter??? Dipsys set right will make make a total different presentation, you need 5 to 6ft lead with them when they go from left to right as presentation. (just set the dipsy right???) I  don't set them right , so i have better luck with a bouncer, and harness, the depth makes me more successful, without the worry of wondering if i am trolling to fast, or slow?

i tie my own also  i like about 3ft of fluorocarbon a few beads or a xps blade spacer. i prefer quick change clevises,  hooks 2 for a crawler harness sometimes i  use a treble as the back hook this depends how close to the bottom im running the harness. blades- colorado, indiana,&willow leaf are the types i use in sizes 2,3,&4

I also make my own rigs for crawlers, but probably a bit larger than most. Since we're trolling for Erie hogs.. to "match the hatch", we use size 7 or 8 blades and 8 mm beads with a couple of  #1 hooks hanging behind. I make all of mine exactly 4 feet long. This way, I have no problems swapping setups quickly. I can snap a harness to the back of a dipsy (with a 12" snubber and 3 foot leader already on it) and have sufficient stealth. The 4 foot lead is fine for snap weights and behind downriggers. My favorite rig and most productive is also gold blades (with red beads), but we've had days when only dark colors work. Guess that's why they make so many colors! Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)

OK, behind a Dipsy 5-6' makes sense. I have never used a Dipsy for Walleye, mostly because the walleye water around here is at best 20' deep and usually shallower. Most local 'Eyes come in5-8' off a wind blown point or a hump. Casting to this kind of structure lends itself to a shorter lead. Different circumstances!

YUP, what slugo is saying, is to make your bait move.Be it in deep water or over here where it is shallow ?  ( that's why we have better luck with our tackle) Were the water is shallow, a shorter leader is better, and we use a LITTLE JON with a shorter lead???  (3 to 4ft) harness of the old three hooker, ONE COLORADO BLADE, (behind three 1/8 0z beads) Its not as easy over here Chris!!! ( I like all your posts) Jim.

Never tried any of the Eyemax harnesses.. but they look pretty nice! I forgot to mention that I tie all my Erie harnesses with 20# Seguar Florocarbon Leader Material. It's quite pricey, but it works great. It's stiffer and more abrasion resistant than regular fishing line. I also tie a high quality ball bearing swivel on each one. As for storing harnesses.. I take one of those foam pool noodles and cut it in about 16" lengths.. make a 1/2 in. deep slit down the length.. slip my swivel in.. wrap my harness around.. hook the hooks in!  Good Fishing, Sluggo (Chris)
