I plan on fishing for Walleye sometime this year. I have never fished for them before, and I need your help. I really just need to know what test leader I should use? Any other tips are appreciated. Thanks.

It all depends on what type of fishing you will be doing bassbum on whether or not if you will even want a leader. If your using a jig/minnow set up you will not want a leader, If your trolling or drifing most people are suggesting now that you use flouro for the leaders which I am not sure I would trust the flouro yet but many of the anglers here do, Walleyhunter I think it was said that he uses 8lb test on his leaders when he trolls but fishes with 40lb PP as his main. your best bait for locating eyes mid summer is to troll spoons that match the forage if you have yellow perch in good amounts troll those patterns they have more fat in them then shad do and when they are available walleye prefer them vs shad and if shad are the main forage base troll your Silvers, Purples and Blues, Spring and fall Cotton Cordells Walleye divers are hard to beat, but DD Husky Jerks work well too, same with the Rapala Original Floaters if you can find a 5' shelf to troll in murky water with a semi decent chop. I hope this helps you out a little bit and dont confuse your exploring anymore then it already was.

The leader is really up to you what ever you feel comfortable with.

I am a die hard sportsman which Means I do it for the sport I do it as light as possible. My dream is to catch some spawning eyes on fly-fishing gear before I die I think a 6lb walleye on fly gear would be exhilarating.

I am watching your 6 you watching mine? Its easier to Judge then be Judged, Its better to be Judged and Learn from it. Holdrege, Nebraska

Fred: Nice to see that you have an open mind. I meet way to many bass fishermen that won't even THINK about fishing for something else. I also have met some guys who won't fish for anything but smallies, to them anything else is a trash fish. Unfortunatly, they also think that all of the local rivers should be managed for smallmouth exclusively. I believe that this is bad for the rivers in general. I have had good luck catching 'eyes on two lures, one now no longer available in the US. If the water depth will permit, try a Rappala Deep Tail Dancer. I prefer Purpledescent. The other lure is(was) a deep diver-10-12' while trolling. Salmo Hornet SDR in the 1 3/8" size. no that is not a typo! This is a floating lure, and if you get snagged and are quick, you could release your drag and the lure would pop free. Did I mention that it also caught a lot of fish? Tom PS: I occasionally find myself in the Cincy area. Is this near you? My wife and I have family there.

Thanks Tom. I'm only about 10 minutes from downtown Cincy, In Florence Ky. If you are ever down this way and want to fish let me know. Maybe you can show me first hand how to catch some nice eyes.
