Question is it more important to get enough bait out there or is it the right bait more important? Lifemember and Bushwacker SMF

That depends on so many different little things, but comes down to where you are, first. You can have a first class bait, bucket loads of it, and pound it out into the water all day long, but like any other fish, if the carp don't use the area, you've pretty much wasted your time and money. So location has to be the first thing.
So, now you've found them. You have two options. Go with something with a lot of flavor and make a grab for them finding it on it's own merits (I call it the "serve them dessert first" theory), or get something out there you're sure they will feed on eventually because they like it and you've got a bunch of small bits of it out there for them to graze their way through and put your bait out in the middle of it (or, the "Monty Python - and now for something completely different" approach). I prefer this one myself, for all sorts of reasons, but primarily because it's the one I've found to work most efficiently. Rather than depend on one fish coming along and finding my one bait and a few freebies out there and hoping for the best (like a blind hog), I'd rather go with the "get the whole herd of 'em grazing" and up my odds as much as possible.
How much of the free stuff you put out would also have to depend on the body of water you're fishing. I go through a good deal of boiled feed corn in a trip, somewhere near a couple of gallons easily, but I'm also fishing a large river with a pretty good current and large ships going up and down, so it is constantly being washed further down river (a plus, as far as I'm concerned). If I didn't have the current, I could probably get away with less. It's a cumulative thing, too. I don't toss two or three gallons of corn out into the river all at once, I slingshot it on out at a more or less constant clip all while I'm there.
I haven't honestly been able to try any of this out in colder water (less than say 45), more because I've been in casts and open braces for the last couple of winters than cold [ I ice fish among other things and have dodged my share of ice chunks for winter steelies], but I have read it works the opposite when the water temps are way down. Since the carp are not exactly in the mood to eat, and don't do it frequently in winter, you don't want them snacking away at things before they get to your bait. That's the theory, anyway. Sounds entirely plausible, but I haven't been able to test it myself. There is no greater fisherman than "the guy here yesterday." |

Once. There is a small lake close by that is full of cats. I have fished it for about 4 years using chicken liver. In 4 years i have caught 1 carp on the liver. Based on that i would have to think it is a vary rare occurance. |

That's a good looking piece of cut bait. Looks more like catfish bait than for carp. Did you have to use a line heavier than your belt strength? That's a tough lip job on the boating, though. |

Hey, guys, what's up? I've used kernel corn right out of the can, nightcrawlers & spikes (maggots) for carp. Carp will also eat minnows when they're in pre-spawn, so maybe the chicken liver incident KVJ & Toyboy talked about were pre-spawn fish. Our fellow Irish and British anglers, though, flavor their corn all the time, with vanilla, strawberry, & other things. If you want, you can check it out at: http://www.fishingposts.com/ They also flavor their spikes, which I've never done, but am willing to try on their recommendation. Tight lines, everybody. If I'm not fishing, I'm thinking about it. Keep the line fresh, the hooks sharp, and have fun fishing. God bless you. -Sonny, Life Member since 2002 |

I use Uncle Josh' carp bait. I have always had good luck with it. it has a long life in the water. Rather it be a good moving current, or just the shallows. Multi-cast, best used if nice and cool though. If it gets warm/hot, it is failry hard to handel and gets pretty sticky. I always try to keep mine on ice when I go out. The cooler it is, the better it is to bait up. You can use it on a straight or trouble hook. I have found that it works best in rivers though. Kinda hard to get a fish to bite if they allready have a taste of something else. But most often, works ANYWHERE FAST!!! Catch 'em and eat 'em :D Ryan |

I gotta' take my hat off to the corn bait but you would not believe the carp you can get out of the water around here using night crawlers. You might pull out a bass or walleye too but that's beside the point. |
