This question is for Hillbillyangler, but of course; like always, everyone is welcomed to give their opinions on the subject. What is the best method for pre-baiting a swim to get and keep carp in your casting area? Is it as simple as throwing sweet corn out right before you fish? Or is there something better to use? Also is it best to pre-bait a day/hour/10 minutes before you make your first cast?
Just for the record I am In No Way a pro or do I know everything that there is to carp fishing all I will say is I live 35 yards from my local river , and I fish it year round and my tips and tricks may work for me but not for others or all areas.
Now with that said , What I do is......
When i am at my local Feed store I check out the prices on certain Items and go by the price. Field Corn ( aka feed corn , deer corn ) is a number one choice for most folks for it is a more cost effective means to chum in carp and keep them there. Simple math 50# sack of feed corn = 9$ ( in my area ).
My next go to cheap bait is Rabbit food , there alfalfa
in rabbit food and the common carp seem to go bonkers over it as well do the Large and Small Mouth Buffalo. this bait is relatively
cheap yet very effective when added to a 60/40 mix of feed corn.
next is range cubes , these are a stinky cattle feed that contains a around 70% Molasses and makes great chum as while it starts to dissolve
and creates a scent cloud that in lakes , it seems to hover above the feeding piles.
Cracked corn works really well also in most method mixes and particles
bait mixes. I also love to use it in my pack baits and flake baits also.
Soy , soy makes one of the best chums I have used and does the trick very fast. But the cost is there.
Millet , Wild bird seed , Tiger nuts and cheap dog food works really well also.
now as far as the best method , well I have yet to find such a beast as IMHO as long as you chum they will come.
What I do , if its local I chum the heck out of an area with one of the said baits above , then i fish my pack/flake baits over , in and around the said chummed area. My hook bait as of late has been a boilie
or fake baits see here: http://justgoinfishin.com/bb/showth...mp;action=lastpost
this I rig on a hair rig :http://justgoinfishin.com/bb/showth...mp;action=lastpost
and fish it with one of my pack/flake bait recipes or one that was given to me.
at all cost i try to bait up a few good spots on a regular basis , yeah this may sound like a costly endeavor
, but hey you only live once. By regular basis , I mean two to three times a week , and if the swim is a good haul from me , I bait it as much as possible
, but when i do bait long distance swims , i bait them heavily
now if your just out to have some fun , or to get a couple of fish , you can also chum an area that you are going to fish either the night before or earlier that morning and fish that evening , But remember when you where a kid , if mom didn't feed you every night at the kitchen table you would have found a new place to get food , same as fish. some folks call it charity fishin
, but those are also the same folks who sit on the bank and blank whilst I'm haulin
' fish , then the next time i see them there in the spot i chummed lol
' is America's best kept sport fish , and I am glad alot
of folks hate them , it just means
there more pig's for me to land ;)
I hope this helps ya out a little , if you need a lil
insight , check out my website and join up on my message forum , its free and there are a lot
of carp anglers , as well as other multi species
anglers there too.
be cool and have a good un
