I was bass fishing yesterday and a big carp hit my 3/8th jig head with a chartruce grub. It was a good fight and I landed him. Well I had five more hits and they all got off ! I went back today and it was the same thing. Im using braid and Ive never had a problem with bass or steelhead getting away. Do you guys use special hooks? Are carps mouths extra soft?

now thats the Million dollar question right there. Since I have been into specimen fishing i have tried everything from Eagle claw to European based hooks and IMHO ( and remember I am not a pro nor claim to be ) I found it all depends on the situation your fishing * Structure ( snags , hang ups and so forth ) * your skill level ( are you a snatch and jerk angler where you horse the fish in ) * how much your willing to put into your hobbie.

I have landed mid teen common carp on a zebco hawg master with 12# mono rigged with an eagle claw bait holder , but let me tell you what a long drawn out fight it was. I also have laneded 20+ common carp on the Highest dollar specialist carp gear from europe and IMHO it all about the play of the fish. IMHO with carp you
CANNOT Horse the fish in , as carp have a Paper thing mouth and you'll rip right through it and chances are unless you get a good hook set , you may end up with a hook pull. I have lost countless fish due to hook pulls.

I think the hook size is where its at IMHO , I compare carp fishing to Fly fishing , yeah some may differ and say its not , but as with any spieces you target you have to trigger a sticke , but with carp you have to more so match there food sources and outsmart them by doing so.

Here In america carp are looked upon as a trash fish or lesser fish and I think  once you give carp fishing a try you will understand why i love it so. nothin beats a mid teen carp on a medium to lite action rod with lite line.

As i stated before I am Not a pro , good or any of that non sence i just fish for carp alot. here's a pict of what I use.

    good Luck and Happy fishing!

Carp have wierd mouths so they often get away when anglers set the hook too hard when they hook the fish. Forget crappie getting nicknamed "papermouths," carp should be called "papermouths."

The hillbilly angler knows his stuff. I too use the Eagle Claw hooks shown in his pic, which I started using entirely by accident, when I first became interested in carp fishing, and figuring out what to use.
