Okay, I’ve completely abandoned the idea of owning a boat, at least not in the near future anyway. But I’ve been looking into getting me a fishing kayak.

Well, my research showed that I have to spend at least $800 on a good sit on with a minimum of 350 lbs weight capacity. Mind you, I’m not the smallest one out there and I want to be able to take some gear with me.

How much more money can I expect to spend before I am ready to hit the water? And what necessities would y’all suggest to have, even on the first outing? And what could be added later? I understand a paddle, life vest, and of course the rods are the most important.

Once again, how much do I look at investing before I can really hit the water and have a good and safe time? All suggestions are welcome. Thanks y’all.

You should be able to get on already rigged(rod holders, anchor, seat pads, and paddle) for that price.

I just got a 12' Perception Manatee DLX 12 for $910.00(including tax) from LL Bean. It came fully rigged with an anchor,2 rod holders, dry storage, lashing straps both front and rear cock pit cover and padded seat and thigh pads. My wife went back two weeks later because they had a sale. We got $178.00 back. You can get a kayak for a few hundred bucks and rig it yourself over time but you still are gonna spend around $700.00 to $1200.00 in the end.

I managed my set up for a very reasonable price, but I did it all myself. I Craigs listed a Kayak for $250, anchor $15 clearance @ EMS, Humminbird Piranahmax 170 $100, rod holders front and rear $30 Paddle from Craigs list $45 and made my own anchor trolley for $5 with some nylon rope and cheap carabiners from harbor freight. I suggest you check out craigs list! Most of those guys post prices high cause they know we're going to bargain with them you can usually knock off $100 of what ever they're asking unless it's already dirt cheap. And unless it's a white water kayak which you dont want any how, the kayak will be in great shape.

The first kayak that I had I rigged it up myself. Not that hard at all to set everything up. But I went off to BPS and picked up there Ascend FS12 which has all the bells and whistles that I needed. Picked it up for 680$ check it out its real nice. It’s about 80lbs witch is the only problem that people are having with it. But once you get past that your fine. I’m 6’3 200lbs and I don’t have any problem moving this bad boy around. I think for the money it’s a pretty darn good set up.

    Happy Fishing
