I just purchased a Cabela`s Salt Striker spinning reel ul-316449 over the internet.  It`s for an older pole and I did`nt want to spend alot it was 54.99 and looks good.Line wt. and capacity was real good.

Has anyone else used a cabela reel before and how was it?

I have not used that particular reel; but I have used the Cabela's DepthMaster Gold baitcasting reels on a few of my trolling rods for the past couple of seasons and I was very happy with them. I have used them to boat many Lake Trout without a problem. I am now retiring them as I upgrade to Shimano Tekota reels; but, I am keeping a couple of the DepthMaster Gold reels as back-ups. I have respooled two of them this season and they are in my "spares tackle bag" ready for action! I would not hesitate to use them.

I have never used the Salt Striker, but I have purchased a few Cabela's brand spinning reels, the Fish Eagle series. A very nice reel for the price. Tom

Old Fart: Am I correct in guessing that you bought this reel for catting around? I won't tell your wife! If so, I think you will be happy, what I can gather is that it is a good reel for larger fish and the drag is substantial. Tom

Hey Turnip---I'm with you on the fly reel! I have 4  and my favorite is a Cabela's 567D graphite Lt weight. I also use a fish-eagle guide series level wind baitcaster that I have used for several years. Good fishing and take care. Bill

OF: Ive been married to the same woman for 35+ years and can't complain too much! My only problem with her is that she does not like to fish(Check that, it is probably not a problem!) but that gives both of us time away from each other. Maybe this is not a bad thing! Have you seen the E-Tec commercial with the woman and 21 million words? Was fishing with the DIL today, and she would not shut up! Sorry for getting off topic! Tom

OF: Glad to hear you are catching fish. I went out Sat. with my son and his wife. We had a nice visit! A buddy gave me a serious spinning reel suitable for Cats, It holds 190 Yds of 20# mono! I guess I'll have to do some flathead or blue fishing, where I live the Channels don't get that big. Tom

Pegsguy,Check out spiderwire stealth 30lb for that reel.I put 50lb on mine works well.Stealth has a new coating init an onit that keeps it from fraying and lumping like the old line used to.

OF: After my last experience with Spiderwire, it is going to take a lot of convincing to get me to try it again. I also can't bring myself to fish freshwater with line over 30# test, and 30 is a stretch for me. I'm glad the Salt Striker is working for you. I need to find a rod stout enough for a spinning reel with 20+ test line. Most of my heavy tackle is levelwind trolling reels as I also fish salmon on Lk. Michigan. Tom
