Does anyone know of an ultralight combo that has a really lite tip, but also has enough backbone to set the hook from 25 plus yards away? I have an Eagle Claw Feather Lite and I love it. So far I have used it 90% of the time this year. The one set back is that I'm losing a crazy amount of fish because the middle section of the rod is just as "lite" as the tip. Does anyone know of something better?

Hey Bassbum, I use an uglystick ultralight with a shakespeare 2500 reel. Alot of the fishing I do is straight down and depths of 5 to 40 ft. I've never a problem setting a hook, even at 40 ft and I've boated a couple of 10 lb plus cats with it. Dave D.

Bassbum,
In my opion it's pretty hard to set the hook at that distance with a rod that has no "back bone". In other words , a fiberglass ultra-lite. I think you may be better off finding a grapite rod that has a fast tip and a good curve to it.
I don't know how light you like to fish but something with a light to medium power ranging from 4 to 8 lb test or even 6 to 12 lb test with a fast action tip may be a better choice .
I like my 5' 6" St Croix Premier spinning rod. It has landed many good size fish has and plenty of hooking power. But as you know there are lot's of rod choices out there and you must find the one you like.
If it's a slower tip you like, you will have a hard time trying to find one that's all graphite!

Pennacle Power Tip Pro w/penn voltage reel.Ibought one a month ago got to use it today pole does very well 11`` striper.Then it started raining &&*&^%^$#@ it.Check them out worth the look.

Fred: The 'glass rods won't have any backbone for what you are doing. Your best bet might just be an Uglystick, they are the only rods I know of with a 'glass tip and graphite body. Try a line with less stretch like Fireline or Stren Microfuse. I have the same problem with my BPS Featherlite glass rods, I can cast a mile but have trouble gettiing fish to the rod, even with fused line. I do like the glass rods for panfish though! Tom

Fred: Yano made a good suggestion. I had a similar problem fishing for Lk. Mich. perch in 50-75' of water. I didn't want to break the bank on a rod that would only be used a few times a year. I found a BPS 6' light action rod for $13.99 that works well with an ultralight reel. I used it on my local pond before taking it to the boat and caught 3 bass between 1-3#. It worked just fine. Now to put some perch onthe end of the line. FYI, because of the depth we fish perch at, we use fused braid like Fireline or Power Pro. Tom

Thanks Yano and Tom. Tom, I am looking into the ugly stick combo. Found one for around $20. Yano, have you ever tried the BPS Tiny Lites? They are only 4' 6", but seem pretty beefy about a foot down from the tip. Just curious. Thanks again everyone.

Fred: I am going to have to look into the Tiny Lites, they sound like a good panfish rod. For dock fishing or vertical presentations a short rod like that is super if it has the right action. When perching on my buddy's boat, I need a longer rod to work around obstructions like the swim platform and downriggers, otherwise I would use a 4'6" rod. Thanks for the tip. Tom

No problem Tom. I went fishing with a buddy today and he had a 6' lite action ugly stick. I made a few casts with it, and I think that will be my new rod. The tip is very light, but the rest of the rod seems fairly stiff. Even though you can almost bend them in half it takes some real effort. I think I've found the rod I've been searching for. Thank you Tom.

Was the Ugli you used a new one or one your bud had in inventory? I have heard rumblings that the new Uglis are not what they used to be. Let me know how this plays out, I bought a new rod for perch fishing but I am not sure how well it will work, it was a BPS special at $14, and that can be a bargain or a waste of money. The BPS rod seems OK, I caught 3 bass (smaller) on it last weekend.

He said he has had it for about a year, but he never used it before. It was his first time out in over 5 years. He bought it, but never tried it; untill last night. I will see how the new one's feel, but if they have the same action I'm buying!  Lifer since 05/08....Ky....Fred |

Fred--I think your choice of the ugly is a good one! I don't think you will be sorry on your pick. What are you using for a reel? The Ugly's are as good as they ever were. Whatever you select I hope ya have good luck with it!! Bill J |

Thanks Bill. I'm actually trying to find an ugly combo.(figure I'll save a few bucks that way) I like the Quantum micro's, but then again they are the only ul reels I have used. This is my first year fishing ul. I love it!

Fred: Let me know what you think of the Uglistick if you buy one. I think I would have rather purchased an Ugli, but at the time money was tight and the BPS rod was almost free due to points! The fact that Perching on Lk Michigan is a low priority to me was also a factor, this rod is one that will be used 3-4 times a year! Tom

Tom, were you the one that said you've used South Bend ul's but didn't like them? I found one today for $17.99. It felt alright, but the price threw me off somewhat. Every now and then you can find a diamond in the rough, but I wasn't sure about this one. I went to two different places, but both were out of stock on the Ugly Stick. Problem solved! I just got back from Dicks sporting goods with my new 4'-8" ultra light Ugly Stik. I got the combo with a Shakespeare Alpha spinning reel. Can't wait to try it out in the morning. Thanks for all the tips, info, and help guys.
