Has anyone used any of the Cabela's Gold Label tackle? I ran across a spinning combo for $30 that sounded good, so I ordered it as a present for my son. The catalog price on the rod and reel total about $80 so I figured I couldn't get hurt too badly, besides I had some free money to use. Any feedback would be welcome. Tom

Recieved my Cabela's order yesterday. I am impressed with the Gold Label rod and reel. This must be a discontinued item as it is no longer in the catalouge, but it did show up in the flyer in today's paper. I would reccomed it for a beginner or casual fisherman, the reel is graphite frame and probably won't take too much abuse but the combo was $30 (was $69.95) and it will probably serve my son for a number of years. Hey Tom, don't worry about the graphite spool. I've got a Quantum Incyte, and it has a graphite spool. I have had it for 3 years and not a single problem. It is also one of the smoothest reels as it has 11 ball bearings.

Graphite spools don't bother me, it's the graphite frame I worry about. I have numerous Shimano reels that came with spare spools made of graphite and as long as I spool them with anything but braid they are fine. This reel has an aluminium spool. BTW I looked at the Cabela's site today and the combo I bought for $29.95 is now $49.95! however the same combo was in a flyer in my mailbox today for $29.95 in store. Go figure. This rig at $30is a good loaner rig. Tom

Yea, I go there at least once a month and look around. But one time, my dad was looking for a new reel and he stumbled upon a Cabela's Prodigy spinning reel. So he took it off of the display and got a good feel for it. There's only one way to describe this reel: it is one of the smoothest working fishing reels ever.
    Tight lines.

I live about 20 min from the Hoffman Estates store and just made my 4th trip there in 3 years. The only time I visit the store is to buy clothes, I hate doing that online. In the 3 or so years since the local store opened, I have probably spent $2500 online and less than $500 in the store. The Prodigy is a great reel, but I'm not spending $100 on a reel for my adult son who fishes about 6 times a summer. Tom
