I need to replace hooks on some of my lures and I need some on the lures that I have made.Are the oval split rings better than the round?

One of the major online retailers has a series of titanium oval split rings that allow you to pull your lure free should you get hung up. They are pricey, but at $10+ per lure maybe not. I have not tried them as of yet, if you give them a try please post your oppinion, I would love to hear it. Tom

I've found no performance difference between an oval split ring or your standard circle split rings. I've seen a tear drop split ring, that will be interesting. I'd imagine this shape will work a lot better.

you will find if you use the oval one where you tie your line there is no chance of the line fraying due to rubbing where the gap is !!!!

Hey Tom, the people at www.tackletour.com have commented very highly  about those special oval split rings (they can be purchased at BPS) They said that while testing a Lucky Craft, on the first cast it got hung up, and by applying steady pressure, the ring snapped loose and the lure came back unharmed (except you do have to replace a split ring and a hook). I would rather lose maybe a $1 instead of $10.

That sounds like a good reason to switch to oval rings.I'll put them on and let ya know how they do.

BA: Remember that the particular oval rings I mentioned are made of titanium and are specially designed to release the hook, ordinary oval rings made of steel do not offer this. Tom

I was just gonna try the Titanium ones on a few of my Rapalas.Titanium is pricey,My Uncle works at a machine shop and he brought me home some Titanium wire I was gonna use to make some spinners and he showed me what it would cost if I need anymore.The 2 foot piece he gave me would cost nearly $20 and you can only get it in a 10 foot spool.

The titanium split rings are spendy, but if rigged correctly you should only lose the hook and the ring will stay on the lure. I have not used any of these, but with some of the new swim baits running $25+, these might be a good investment, just make sure you rig them with the split at the hook. Tom

The concept with the titanium split rings is good, but there are other solutions as well. Use a light wire hook. The metal will bend and your lure will more than likely be freed. If you do a little line tying, use mono that's lighter than your main line other than the split rings.
