I bought a simple baitcasting reel from cabela's maybe 8 months or so ago i don't even know if it is a good one i think its just a genaric cabelas pro guide brand, it does so "Gold Label" on the side of it but when i look up pics of the reel they dont rlly look like the one I have they are alot bigger the one I've got kinda looks like a quantim a few differences but anyway, i just happened to notice that my drag isnt working like at all and i am trying to take it about but for some reason the face plate isnt coming off so if anyone has any suggestions or has an easy fix as far as the drag goes that would be GREATLY appreciated i need help thank you for your time |

Have you backed off the drag while it's not in use? This could be a problem. |

If you have a store nearby, just take it back. As long as it is a Cabela's branded product, they normally will just replace it for you no questions asked. A large portion of the house brand stuff at Cabela's is made by Okuma, at least the reels. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

Not trying to make you sound dumb, but if you loosened the drag and it still holds tight - are you sure you turned it the right direction? You might try turning the opposite way and pull on the line. I'm not that familiar with baitcasters, but maybe it's got a part in backwards. Dave D.

well yea I'm not an idiot lol and I did think of that I moved the drag both ways half way i tried everything I could think of and nothing unless there is a part that is loose inside I don't know I did end up getting it apart and I didnt really know what I was lookin for when I got it apart but i cleaned up all access dirt and other debri from the gears and stuff now I just have to get some oil to put in it but after i put it together i was hoping it would work again but once again nothing is happening its enough to drive me nuts i still got another good 3-4 months before i can really use it again but i want to get it set up and ready to use before the time comes |

IT LOOKS LIKE YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE IT TO A LOCAL REEL REPAIR SHOP . IF YOU CAN'T FIND ONE IN YOUR AREA ASK AT A LOCAL BAIT OR SPORTING GOODS STORE IF THEY MAY KNOW SOMEONE THAT DOES REEL REPAIR ON THE SIDE . |

You could probably send it back to Cabela's, but the shipping may cost you almost as much as a repair. Tom Fishin' fool in NE Illinois |

I work on reels quite a bit, so I'll try to help you if I can. Did the drag work at one time? Other than the drag, does the reel work well (casting, cranking, level wind, etc)?

Sounds like someone cranked down on the drag and left it that way. When your done using the reel for the season, back off the drag so the spool is loose and you won't have to worry about it sticking again. Always drink upstream from the herd -----

Glad to hear that you are fixed. When it sticks like that it's probably something hanging up on the drive shaft between the drag stack and the star wheel. Take the handle and side cover off along with all the parts on the drive shaft down to and including the drive gear. Make sure that there aren't any burrs on the drive gear I.D. or any of the other parts in the stack up to the star wheel. Brush a light coat of reel grease on the drive shaft and reassemble. While you are reassembling refer to the schematic to be sure that all parts are assembled in order and correctly oriented. Pay particular attention to the two wave washers located somewhere between the star wheel and the anti reverse roller bearing in the cover. Make sure that they oppose each other. Like this (), not this ((. I think that you probably have a dry drag system, so make sure that all of the drag washers and the portion of the drive gear (front & back) that contact them are clean and dry. That should keep the drag from hanging up in the future. Good luck!
