I was looking through my basement and found a really old saltwater combo. It was my grandfather's and I tried looking up the rod and reel, but little real information came up. It's a Montague rod and a conventional reel with no line guide and the only name on it is JC Higgins. Its 7 feet long and the rod says Model 703. The reel has both a lever drag and a star drag. Any help would be much appreciated.

JC Higgins was a store brand back in the 50s and 60s, either Sears or Wards. The products were made by major manufacturers to spec and private labeled like the house brand tackle at BPS or Cabela's. You may find some info if you can locate an archive of old catalogs. Tom
