I did something today I haven't done in a long time, I bought a cheap prespooled reel as a loaner. Figured the line on it was junk, but had no idea! It was like uncoiling a slinky! Keep this in mind when buying reels, there is no telling how long these things have been on the shelf. Tom |

I strip that crap off any new reel before I even use it,I learned that when I was only 13,I saved up some money and bought an ugly stik combo and took it out fishing the first day of trout and spent all day fighting birds nests. So ever since I strip the line off even on my kids reels and replace it with trilene.A kid can't learn to fish if you spend all your time untangling there line! I have to agree. I learned that at a young age as well. I even change the line out on the kid shakespear combos. Good thing I have in the past. My oldest landed a nive #4.5 rainbow off that rod. My youngest has caught many limits with his Lightening McQueen rod this past year. Jeremy a.k.a. Cletus U.S. Navy-Go Navy, Beat Army!!! NAFC LM, NAHC LM, NRA LM |

I too strip the line off first thing. As a matter of fact, I just recently bought my girlfriend a cheap spinning combo from walmart so she could have a pole to fish with. (At this time I'm down to just one rod myself) Anyways, I let her fish for just a short time with it as she was antsy to learn how to fish with a spinning rod. after just 3 throws, she had a birdsnest that couldn't come back. So I stripped the line, just like I do with all my own rods. And put on some spiderwire. That will get us through this year anyways, I'm starting to do some more reading into the fishing lines, and probably gonna try out some braid and florocarbon next year. Scott Miller

When all else fails, at least you can still bait the line and go fishing.

Scott: There are at least 4 or 5 threads on the forums discussing various lines and the pros and cons of each. Some of the posters are species specific guys, keep that in mind. You have my email if you want to discuss this. Tom Lifer in NE Illinois |

Yup I don't keep the original line. It's always mono and you get to guess what lb test it is. I get naked reels or strip it off and recycle the crap. Unless it's quite clear what the line is. I have got a Catfish reel that came pre spooled with 20lb Cajun Line and have had no problems. "it doesn't matter if the horse is blind....Just load the cart anyway!!!" Fred: If I bought a prespooled reel or combo that had cajun or the like on it, I would take a chance. The prespooled reels that I have purchased have had ? on them and I don't want to deal with the BS even on a loaner combos. Usually when I loan out a rod I am fishing with the person using that rod and would rather fish than deal with the problems. Bet money you feel the same way. Tom Lifer in NE Illinois |

I only go for Crappie/bluegill, and Cats for eating sake, but that's not to say I don't fish for whatever comes my way. Scott Miller

My point was that the species that you fish for can color your opinion. The catfish guys seem to like the Cajun red, bass guys favor mono or fluoro and the walleye folks like braid or fusion. I fish for what is biting that day which is why I have a room full of rods, most of which have at least 2 spools with different line. Tom Lifer in NE Illinois |
