I would like to try my hand at building my own fly rod but would like to start with a kit for the first one. I have looked at several online such as from cabelas and from mudhole rod building supplies. It looks like the ones from cabelas have pretty much everything you need, including thread and adhesives. Mud hole offers several kits around the same price range(under $100) but do not come with thread or adhesives. Just the blanks, reel seat, handle and guides. I am not too worried about these not having thread or adhesives but would like some input. If you have tried one of these please let me know. I would be interested in hearing what other club members have to say rather than just relying on customer reviews from cabelas.

    Thanks

    Brian

Well I'll take a look at that. I've been wanting to build my own rods for a couple years, but never have yet. As no-one I know has ever tried, and haven't really heard much from anyone who's ever done it. If I get started, it would probably be something from Cabela's because I love that place. But we shall see. I'm expecting some Cabela's catalogs soon.

IF YOUR BUILDING YOUR 1ST ROD , A KIT MAY BE THE WAY TO GO. BUT IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A SPICIFIC ROD , SUCH AS A JIGGING, BOTTOM BOUNCER, ETC. YOU MAY WANT TO START WITH INDIVIDIUAL PARTS .

WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT, YOU DON'T SAVE ANY MONEY. IT'S A LABOR OF LOVE! AND YOU WILL LOVE IT! JANN'S NET CRAFT.COM CAN GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHATS AVAILABLE ,THEN GO FROM THERE. ONCE YOU BUILD THE FRIST ONE, YOU WILL BUILD ANOTHER!!

NO SPECIAL TOOLS ARE NEEDED.  YOU DON'T NEED ANY EQUIPMENT . WHEN RUNNING THREAD TO WRAP GUIDES , I WOULD RUN THE THREAD BETWEEN THE PAGES OF A BOOK, AND ADD WEIGHT AS NEEDED TO KEEP THE PROPER TENSION. THE SPOOL OF THREAD , I WOULD PLACE IN A GLASS TO KEEP IT FROM GETTING AWAY!
A SPINNING ROD WOULD BE MY FRIST CHOICE IN ROD BUILDING . GUIDE PLACEMENT IS NOT AS CRITICAL AS WITH A CASTING OR FLY ROD.

THE HARDEST PART MAY BE ADDING THE FLEX-COAT ! ONCE  APPLIED YOU MUST ROTATE THE ROD SLOWLY UNTIL ITS DRIED.
