A couple of years back I flew up to Portland Maine to visit a friend for a week. When he told me that you didn't need a license to fish in the ocean I figured I would give it a shot from the public pier downtown while he was at work one day. I was just bottom fishing with anchovies for whatever but didn't catch any fish. I had two hooks on and first I pulled up two crabs, one on each hook. There were a couple of giggles from passerbys. Then a couple of minutes later I snagged on something and ended up pulling up a pretty big live sponge. A crowd started gathering as people wondered what I would pull up next. Finally I snagged onto something else and it was someone's old sock. With that I decided I would come back and try another day. But hey, at least the crowd found it amusing. :-)

Same thing happened to one of my friends, except it was a toilet seat.  Yes, a toilet seat.  How it got there I don't know.

I caught a bunch of weird things in my three years of fishing.  The first thing was a really big eel.  I was fishing for catfish with chicken liver and was catching probably five inch catfish until I had something really really big on and it turned out to be an eel almost three feet long.  Another time I was cat fishing and caught a snapping turtle that luckily broke my line before I had to try to take it off.  Then the last thing I was fishing with my little brother in florida for catfish again using treble hooks and my brother walked over to a duck and poked it with his pole and the hook got caught in one of the ducks wings.  I was so mad at him and never took him fishing again.

Well, one thing I caught when I was a youngster was a big trout. Nothing too unusual about that right? It wasn't until I got the trout up to the boat that I realized that it was deformed! What normally would have been a 5 or 6 pound trout, was a little less! Considering he was short and stubby, missing about a quarter of his body length. But he still had his tail, and everything else was in tack also. He somehow managed to survive all those years to grow that size being a deformed rainbow! It's hard to explain what he looked like unless you see it with your own eyes! Check out my profile I will be posting a pic of it soon.

Now before you start making fun of how dorky I looked as a child, take a look at this trout. It is huge but it has some kind of deformity. Does anyone know what could have caused this? The lake I caught him in is very clean.

Captain you dont look so bad
Maybe you were and Feeling Guilty  ( Shows Morals )
I want to give my Opinion about your Question
I Think this looks like a Fish that was in a Fight Way Prior to Being Caught !
It is Very Common for a Fish to Attack another Fish and Bite Off the Tail !
Once this happens it is Hard for the Fish to swim away !
Being a Fish is a Rough Life

Good Question
I would Think that the Fish spend Most of its Life Hiding
Which would Mean that the Fish was Probably Caught from Shore !
The Lower section of the Fish Clearly Shows the Angle of Attack and Removal of Fins !
Also Many Fish that are Caught and Released are Soon Attacked due to the Blood Scent from the Fish !
So this fish may have been Caught and Released also !
Thanx

CASMAN I caught him from a boat in deep water. And if you look closely at his rear fin, you will see that it is mostly intact. It is just very small. He had no damage wounds on him at all. The only other species of fish in the lake I caught him in are other Rainbow trout and largemouth bass. He may have been planted like this as well.

It looks like the fish got it's tail gnawed off by a very large Muskie while it was young.  That fish is lucky that it survived as long as it did!

Like I said, the only fish in the lake are bluegill, trout, largemouth bass and bullhead catfish. So it couldn't be from a pike or muskie. Maybe another trout or bass did it?

Well Captain it could have been anything that attacked the fish! Crayfish Turtle snake ETC.
I still believe the fish was attacked and it may be possible for other types of fish to be in that body of water. Bullhead Largemouth and Bluegill make a great setting for Northern Pike and Walleye, Possible in this day and age a Sheephead or Asian carps or even a Goby Population ( Nowadays )
Thanx

No. It's not possible for pike or muskie or walleye to make there way into this lake. I think it is a deformity of some kind. A birth defect.

I know a guy who has a small lake in front of his house It was full of largemouth untill the racoons or possums or whatever got a hold of it. That fish could have been atttacked by anything! Really.
Thanx
