    I believe this is an old wive's tale based on a bit of fact. Fish are repelled by the acid in the oils on your hands. Saliva is alkaline and will neutralize the acid, but both soon wash off in the water. Tom

    This actually started as spitting on the bait, meaning natural products. It has been said that it may have some value there as saliva has digestive enzymes and may start breaking the material down. I wouldn't think there would be much "digestion" and the effect on a artificial would be really small.
