The 2 Abu's are not the classic rounds like the 5500 or 6500, but they are not completely low profile either.  These are the reels that I learned to cast with and maintained them on a regular basis.  Both have magnetic braking control as well as static brake.  I'd consider them user friendly -- with their manuals, very easy to learn.  The difference between the two is drag systems, otherwise they're identical.

If you have not used a bait casting reel before, have some one who knows how to use one show you how to set one up. If you get proper instruction you will probably love it, if not you may end up like a lot of other people I have met and bought their bait cast reels fromthem for pennies on the dollar. There is a few simple tricks to using a bait caster that makes them a dream to use rather than a nightmare.

hey jearon iwould take them both. i have used baitcasters in the past and had much sucess after loosing touch with a baitcaster I just got frustrared(pehaps from using low quality reels!)I do a lot of dock flipping and heavy cover fishing for bass. seams to me that the hook set and the backbone of a baitcaster would work better for me in these situations than spinning gear! send me a PM and we can go from there! A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work!!!!!!!! The Fish

Sorry, I've been on vacation--fishing of course. No internet where I was. I still have both Garcias, in fact I used them on vacation. If you're still interested, either post or pm.

TRULY surprised to see that you still have the Abu reels rj

Over 2 years and not sold?

Those are reasonable prices...especially for the 521 XLT

    I have one...very nice reel

Try putting them in a post to Member Classifieds...

    http://www.fishingclub.com/my-nafc/forums/aff/167

And a pic or 2 would help

    Good luck!

Thanks for the input.  Had a good buyer, but he had some issues to deal with so I didn't pursue any further.  Besides, I've been using them this summer.
Went to Holcombe (your area?) with my brother.  We caught a lot of variety but nothing to keep.  TUFF walleye slot on that lake.

    You're welcome rj.

Holcombe is about 100 miles northeast of me....part of the Chiippewa River system. I'm at the FAR lower end of it.

Ironically though...my folks used to live in Stanley in the late 1970's...and my Dad & I fished it once. We launched & fished the Jump River bay...with all the stumps

Didn't catch anything...no depth finder...no hydrographic map in those days

Slot limit for walleye these days is TOUGH for sure

Let me know if you decide to go back there...as I have info I can share with you
