Last week a couple NAFC Members came to Rainy Lake, Ontario for some fishing and I thought I would summarize a few of the events for anyone interested.
We have a cabin on Rainy Lake and I invited Greymist (as a return gesture when he took me fishing in Woodbury, Minn.) and L.M.Ray to visit for some fishing. L.M.Ray[B], with a couple other guys named Don & Rob, rented a cabin across the lake from us and [B]Greymist stayed with us. The first couple of days the weather was windy and rough and made it difficult to get out on the main part of the lake. Things settled a bit and we were able to make it out to some of the reefs to fish on, where most of the walleye supposedly congregate this time of year, but most of the walleye's were on the small side (12"-13"). We worked the lake for a few days but weren't able to find where the big fella's were feeding. L.M.Ray's crew's boat did have the misfortune to hit some unseen rock (Rainy Lake has a lot of unseen/unmarked reefs) but forunately there wasn't any significant damage. I give Greymist, Ray & Co. a lot of credit for not getting discouraged over the lack of big fish. I promised them they would hook big fish but didn't deliver. All I can say is that I took them to several of my favourite places but we just couldn't get the bigger ones to take. They were there, because they showed on the graph, but they weren't hitting what we were offering. We all got together one night & had a big fish fry at our cabin (Ray & Co. supplied the fish and did the cooking). It was great to "break bread" together and chat it up a bit, however short it was. I seriously enjoyed meeting and fishing with the guys and hope to do it again soon. Greymst & L.M.Ray & Co. are very easy going guys and were a pleasure to be around. If ya get a chance to meet and/or fish with one of 'em it would be well worth your time.
