On a side note:
I went to Lake Waconia (here in the burbs of Mpls.) and the island was absolutely lousy with them dang things. The water near the shore was milky white from them....well you know what they were doing. I told my buddy (who was handling the trolling motor), that if he got my boat to close to shore and they did you know what on my boat, he was gonna lick it off. Good thing my buddy is a wise man Big Grin<!--graemlin::D--> Where did these dang birds come from anyway??!! I don't ever remember seeing them as a kid and I was around plenty of lakes then.

Along with the Bald Eagle, they were put on the endangered species list due to the effects of DDT. They were almost wiped out. Too bad.

I've been reading articles about the cormorant problem from all over the U.S. and Canada. Everyplace written about, the birds are destroying habitat for other birds and are "suspected" as being the cause of a downturn in the fish population. And always, "more studies are being done".

Saw a few of them in the channel that connects Fountain lake and Albert Lea lake in Albert Lea.
THey sure seem to be brave little !@#&*%. They'll park themselves within 20 feet of you in the shallows and gobble up bait fish.
Oh if it were only legal to shoot a pellet gun within city limits...

Check out the July/August/September issue of the mag. There is a big article on cormorants. See the Minnesota part They say there's 2525 nesting pairs on Little Pelican Island. They want to reduce the populatin by 250 to 750 pairs only. At that rate they'll repopulate in no time.

Considering that the females lay forom 1 to 7 eggs (mean average of 4) each mating season, hell yeah they'll be right back up to their original numbers if not even higher.

The birds need thinned out for sure, but there should be something positive about it eventually. Tears ago the alwives found there way to the Great Lakes and large implements had to keep the beaches clean. It was terrible, but someone who I wish I could thanks put salmonids into the lakes and look what we have now, not enough alwives to feed them. So we go from wanting the alwives out to wanting to get more. My Point: Some how there will end up being a positive we just have to keep at it!

I was at Leech Lake MN last month and the fishing is coming back. Unfortunately, so are the cormorants. We drove through flocks of them on the lake. Hopefully, they were gathering to migrate out of there.

My husband & I went on a Leech Lake muskie excursion 2 years ago in September. We were quite surprised to see people that had been hired by the state of Minnesota to shoot these pests. It's a little unnerving when you're on a boat in the middle of a rather large lake, and you see people shooting birds!
