My brother and I are coming to Michigan July 21st, and we've always wanted to catch northern pike. We're looking for any place within 3 hours or so of Detroit that we could drive to and find a great lake that would almost guarantee some good pike fishing. We'd like to stay in a lodge or cabin, or even just a motel if needed, with a place to rent a boat nearby. We might hire a guide if we need to so we can be sure to catch some good fish. Any ideas? We are quite good at largemouth bass and trout fishing, but we could use some pointers on pike and how to find big smallmouths, too.

    Thanks!

    Papa,

Well, how far is it to your side of the state? Do you have some excellent pike lakes?

I AM SLIGHTLY NORTH WEST OF DETROIT ON THE EAST COAST OF LAKE MICHIGAN. 36 MILES WEST OF GRAND RAPIDS. 20 MILES NORTH OF GRAND HAVEN; AND ABOUT 1.5 MILES FROM THE LAKE ITSELF. MUSKEGON ONCE USED TO BE A BIG LUMBERING TOWN OF MANY SAW MILLS; OF WHICH MANY REMINANTS LITTER THE BOTTOM OF MUSKEGON LAKE. THIS MAKES THE LAKE A GOOD FISHERY FOR SMALLMOUTH, WALLEYE, NORTHERNS AND NOW THE ILLUSTRIOUS "GOBY"!!! WHEN TYHE TIMES ARE RIGHT WE HAVE VERY PRODUCTIVE RUNS OF STEELHEAD, COHO,ECT. THERE ARE NUMERIOPUS CHARTERS AVAILABLE IF YOU WANT. THIS WAS ONCE A VERY PROSPERIOUS INDUSTRIAL CITY; BUT LAST 20 YEARS CATERS TO THE TOUREST MORE THAN ANYTHING. I AM ONE OF THE FORTUNATE WHO STILL HAVE A GOOD PAYING JOB, WHICH ARE BECOMING FEWER EVERY YEAR. AT THE PRESENT TIME WE ARE HAVING OUR SUMMER CELEBRATION-MUSIC FESTIVAL, ECT. COMING SOON IS OUR ANNUAL COUNTY AIR FARE; ANOTHER BIG ATTRACTION. JUST HAD OUR FIRST GOBY FEST FISHING CONTEST WITH ANOTHER COMING UP IN AUGUST. BASS AND WALLEYE TOURNIMENTS TAKE PLACE SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR. ALSO HAVE BIG TURNOUTS FOR THE SPRING AND FALL SALMON RUNS. I'M JUST GETTING INTO THESE AS I'VE NEVER CARED TO BEFORE. YOUR WELCOME TO COME IF YOU'VE A MIND TO. DENNIS

if you're going to be in the
Detroit area, Lake St Clair is a must. A great lake for perch, walleye, pike, muskie and big and littlemouth bass. I know guides are available and you have to be careful because half the lake is Canadian waters. I've caught largemouth, smallmouth, perch, walleye and pike in the past few years.

I did see some good information on Lake St. Clair in an article in the Detroit Free Press about a guide taking out some Japanese bass fisherman. I contacted the guide, and we might use him, but I've yet to find out how much he costs. You can see the article at: http://www.freep.com/sports/outdoor...050630.htm

It sounds like a good fishery, although, we were really hoping for something picturesque -- a smaller lake out in the woods with a lodge or something like that. Any other ideas that are more like that?

    Papa,

I looked at an online map, and it says your area is about two and a half hours from Detroit. That's not too far for us to drive, and if you have some beautiful country up there with consistent summer pike fishing, we just might want to come.

Hello. I live in Alpena Mich (about four hours or so north of Detroit) If you are interested in catching some decent pike and bass then there is a lake about 15 miles west of Alpena. Fletcher's Floodwaters. They have an excellent fishery. Not real deep but quite big. There are 3-4 resorts on the lake with one or two public launches. I would suggest Jacks Landing. They have a grade A resort with boat rentals and fishing supplies. For more info click on http://www.jackslanding.com or call 989-742-4370. They catch some real nice fish from this lake. There is another baitshop which posts photos of some of the catch and it makes your heart begin to thump. I had a reunion with my father after 18 years on this lake. He came up from St. Louis MO and we were fishing for panfish and kept 62 and caught well over 150. Also caught a nice bass and a pike 2 inches from being legal (24". You can also get maps of michigan lakes and more info by visiting the following website: http://www.fishweb.com If you get up this way drop me a line and maybe I could bring my boat out and meet you there. Good luck. Alex L.M.

    Hey PikeSlammer,

Thanks for the advice -- I took your advice and had a great trip! Sorry we didn't look you up when we came, but we put all the details together at the last minute. I posted a report on the trip in a newer thread on this forum -- take a look. I included a good photo.

    Thanks again,
    Steve
