My opinion, you can't go wrong with owning / using Shakespeare Ugly Sticks. There are many models, from ultra light to heavy duty action. They cover everything from Panfish to Muskies, even some Saltwater fish too. Now if you want to talk about very good rods [esp] graphite and casting, // then Fenwick, All Star, Cast Away, Falcon, and G-Loomis are tops for me. There are other brands out there too, that I have never used. There are notable exceptions of course. [esp] older rods from the past. = Lews Speed Stick, Winchester rods, Berkley Lightning rods, // Penn's - for Saltwater, // Shimano Bullwhip, // Bass Pro Shops Mean Green Stik and Graphite 96 rods, // and some models made by Garcia. I still use a Garcia spinning rod today that was bought by my father in 1963. I can't even imagine the number of fish it has helped bring in, and will continue to catch. |

For my salt water stuff i use Ugly sticks 7.0 med/heavy spinning with Shimano stradic reels, in my opinion nothing finer.
for fresh water i use Hurricane redbone 7.0 one piece med with quantum energy spinning reels
I have a phlueger classic on a carrot stick I use it for jigging
I love these setups and wouldn't trade them for anything else

I have to agree about the Ugli Stiks, you get a lot of rod for the money. My favorite upper mid priced rod is the Cabela's XMLti at about $190. It is the cheapest rod I have found that comes with RECoil guides (titanium). Closest rod to it in features is almost $300, so it would be unfair to compare it directly with an Ugli at 1/6 the price. I bought a St Croix Triumph spinning rod last year after using dozens of cheaper rods through the years. No comparison. This is the cheapest line St Croix makes ($60-$80) but they are easily the best rods I've ever owned. I bought 5 more earlier this year...a couple more for me and a couple for my wife. The seven foot, medium-light, fast action spinning rod is perfect for worm and tube fishing. The seven foot medium, fast action bait caster is great for spinner baits. You can buy the higher end St Croix rods and I'm sure they are great, but for a reasonable price, the Triumph line is tough to beat. |

Are the Triumph rods made in the US or has St. Croix like Fenwick started importing rods? I own many rods made who knows where and don't have a problem with that but St. Croix has made it a point to advertise that their rods are "Made in Wisconsin". Tom Lifer in NE Illinois |

In my opnion St Croix rods are the best. I own 15 of them and love em all. Most are Premier rods and one mojo bass and one Legends Tournament Bass rod in the drop shot versions. When I can I going to upgrade to all Legend Tournament rods. But for the money The Premier rods can't be beat if your on a budget At $100 or so each and they are made in the US except the Triumph which is made in Tiwan. Most weigh in at around 3 to 4 ounces and that make a differance when fishing and casting for hours. I agree the Ugly Sticks are good rods But weigh a ton. |

For a big catfish hunter, I don't think you can beat a Rhino Kevlar rod. Try breaking that sucker!

i use shimano or basspro. unfortunately my brother broke my ultralite stimulas. it was a great ultralite capable of putting the smackdown on nice smallmouth, and is great for pan fishing(what i do most).

I own a Shakespear/Ugly Stick combo in a spinning and baitcasting outfit. Both are awesome rods and have lasted a long time. Diawas are good rods too, but the rod tips and guides break off easy. TIGHT LINES! |

I have had several Shimano rods over the years and they are no doubt good rods and at a good price, then I discovered St Croix rods and gave all my Shimano rods to my son. At last count I have 15 St Criox rods in my boat and love every one of them. Harry |

I like the St Croix's as well. I've been replacing/upgrading my rods to the Avid series and was matching them with Shimano Symetre spinning reels before they changed. I topped my trigger rods with Shimano Curado's. The only disadvantage is that I really like two piece rods, and there aren't a lot offered in the Avid line. |
