Has anyone had the opportunity to fish Petersburg Alaska.

I'm taking trip there in Aug. for Silvers and Halibut .

No such thing as too much advice...

I have never fished there...to far South for me. Advice? Bring a big cooler to take your halibut and salmon home with you. Lots of big fish and good times.

Hope your visit is a good one.

This is no joke, I fished Petersburg in 1947, Irish Lords off the floots in the boat harbor. Hand line. Sold them to fox farmers for a penny a pound and spent the money up town at the icecream joint.
I was 7 years old and thought I was in the big time. My dad was a comercial fisherman, he cought the largest halibut everbaught by Kaler and Dahl. A picture of it was in the Alaska exibit at the
world Fair in Seattle in 1962. I think it waighed 642 pounds. My son now has a copy of that picture and the weight is on the pic. So there are some large fish around there. Go out and get one. Good luck to ya. You will have a blast.

We are haveing a record year for Chinook Salmon this year! Nuthin' real big, but everybody is limiting out on 16 to 30 lbers. Have seen a few larger ones caught, one up to 62 lbs, but they are an exception.  If you fish a charter boat in S.E., you can only keep one halibut a day, and that halibut can not exceed 37 in.!!!!  Anything larger must be released!

The halibut restriction for guided trips was changed to 45 in. for 2012, but, you may keep a trophy fish that I believe, exceeds 68 in.
