My buddy, salmonking, his son, Ethan, and I went out yesterday to San Luis Reservoir for some striper fishing yesterday to celebrate Ethan's 5th birthday. First time on the reservoir and first time for striper fishing for me. Thanks to the comments and recommendations from fellow members on this forum, I think we outfished everyone out there! We started off slow, but moved near a "pack" of boats by the dam. We found the right spot (about 500 ft off the dam), the right depth (between 110 and 130 ft) and the right technique (cut-plug anchovies about 10-20 feet off of the bottom). We landed 5 stripers, all over the minimum of 18". Ethan had a nice one up to the boat, but lost it before we could net it. That would have given us that 6 fish limit. Now, we seen a fish or two come in from trollers and those anchored, but we were doing a controlled drift/slow troll. Utilizing the trolling motor to control the boat's position in the slight breeze, we were able to keep 4 lines in the water without fouling lines. We also had several strikes, but missed the hook sets. Early in the morning, we were throwing top water, rattletraps and jigs, but didn't catch a thing. We actually caught our first striper around 10:00 am! And we had been on the lake since 7:00. But, by 3:00, we were done (crispy done). Here's a pix of average catches-they went from 19" to 24". Nothing huge, this time.
