David, I'm not sure what you are after but when I was down there for my albacore trip and had time to kill, I was at the pier in San Diego. Everyone on the pier was pulling up mackerals and perch one after the other. Occassionally, people will catch the bonitas as well. I'm not too familiar with the Carlsbad area or any area down south LOL.....but anyhow, good luck down there!

I am going to be in Carlsbad, just north of San Diego the week of Thanksgiving, and am looking to do some fishing around there. Anyone have any suggestions of where to go? Is it all off-shore fishing in that area? Any boats that I should definately look into, or any to definately avoid?

    Thanks for any help.

I, too, will be San Diego for Thanksgiving weekend visiting in-laws. I'm sure we'll try to put in some fishing somewhere while we're down there. San Diego lakes are tough to fish and expensive! Seeing as you're from the Midwest (I'm born and raised Iowan Big Grin<!--graemlin::D-->), I'd recommended going out of Pt Loma for some ocean fishing. Maybe 1/2, 3/4, full day or even overnighter. Make it an experience you can't get in Michigan. I live in Central CA and I have a bass boat and I know the local lakes pretty well. But, I will not trailer my boat to fish San Diego lakes. I know we're deer hunting at Camp Pendleton at least Friday of that weekend. When I say "we" I mean my wife, daughter, in-laws and myself. We're all packing rifles and hunting coastal blacktail deer on the Marine base. Did the same thing last year as well. I know this was a vague answer, but if you want specifics, let us know and we'll try to help you out Wink<!--graemlin:;)--> some more.

I have done quite a bit of salt-water fishing from SW Florida and Key West. Mostly fishing on Party boats and some trolling trips. My biggest question would be which boat or boats would someone suggest?

And should I look at for something like a 3/4 day trip? Or is a 1/2 day just as good, or is a longer trip way better? I know in SW Florida, you have to travel at least an hour to get to some decent fishing territory, while in Key West even a slow party boat can get you on good fish in half an hour.

Also, is there any gear I should try to bring with me, excluding a rod & reel?

    Thanks

Hello, I know this info is way late for most of the people asking about places to fish around Carlsbad and south. In the carlsbad area there is a power plant on the coast with jettys leading to a bay both areas have put out some good bass , sharks and some good hali and misc. others as well.Down in S D there are several good piers like ocean beach and pacific beach and several in san diego bay. Mission bay is one of my favorite places to fish with 2 jetteys and tons of shore spots. To go off shore I would recommend to call H&M landing, Seaforth or Islandia sport fishing. Good fishing, fastwheels

Excellent recommendations, fastwheels. My issue is seasickness. Every frickin time I go out I get seasick. So, I prefer to be sick for only a 1/2 day than a 3/4 day. Big Grin<!--graemlin::D--> But, I'd call H&M Landing or any of the other charters and ask specifically what fish you will be targeting. I've been on a 1/2 day with family and caught sculpin (sucky day). Then went back for another 1/2 day and we caught several nice barracuda.
